I have a PIXMA iP5200 with the vertical black ink smear problem down the back of the paper. I called the local Canon printer repair facility, and a serviceman said that the black line is caused by too much ink in the ink absorber device below the paper path. He said to fix it would cost $60 to $90 because it requires disassembling part of the printer, replacing the absorber foam, installing a longer tip for the excess ink, and reassembling and testing the printer. I asked if this would be a permanent fix. He said no, that the problem could reoccur.
Given the cost of repair and the age of the printer (over 3 years), I decided today to buy a Canon MX850 All-in-One printer at the local Staples, which cost me $169 after a $30 mail-in rebate from Canon. The MX850 uses the same printer cartridges as the iP5200 and offers lots more features
Except for the recent printing problem, I got excellent results and service from the iP5200 over the time I used it.

hey, wel if the copier is showing a message saying that the waste toner is full it means the waste toner deposit is attached to the drum unit.
so, open up the frotn cover, pull down the (drum)-lock lever, it should release the left cover, then pull towards you the drum unit, and there you go.
the black case with a small trasparent cap is the waste toner deposit.
you have two ways to go.
1 you may remove that rounded transparent plastic cap and be able to vaccum the waste toner (dont even try reusing that toner, it wont work ok) or
2 you can go the other way wich allows you to easily vaccum it: remove the drum (the roller itself) then the charger roller, then the cleaning blade and there yo go again, but now you got more space to vaccum and believe me it is easier this way.
an additional choice would be to buy a new drum unit gpr18 i think (check please) and forget all about vaccum-ing.

SOURCE: Thick black line on printed page
If the line runs the way that the paper does I.E. vertical on a portrait then it is dirty rollers normally.
If you open the lid and wipe the rollers this shoukd reduce or eliminate the black lines.

There is something on your scanner glass. Clean the glass with glass cleaner. If this happens when using the automatic document feeder, open the top side cover where the paper feeds into. There is a narrow glass strip there. Clean that as well.
If this fails, the scanner head has a bad sector on the CCD and will need to be replaced. You will probably find that it will be cheaper to replace the printer entirely if that is the case.
