Question about Kitchen Ranges

1 Answer

Earlier I was cleaning around the top burner knobs for the two front burners on my Magic Chef Cooktop, model 8241RA. I removed the knobs and was cleaning the area that is underneath the knob. At that time a clicking began that I usually hear when lighting the Cook top. However, when I turn it on and off the clicking continues. How do I fix this?

Yes, the switch is off. I looked, though it's not easy, and I didn't see any loose or disconnected wires. I assume one would need to attack this from underneath from where you can't see anything. It has a closed bottom panel. What I did notice is that there is a spark at all four ignitors when the click happens. It could be that all four are clicking. Don't laugh (haha) but I can't hear in my right ear so it's really difficult for me to tell which one is causing this. However as I lean next to each burner it seems to be loudest from the left front. That was the burner knob I was cleaning when this began.

OK, thanks Rick. I don't think it's an easy task accessing from the top or bottom but I'll go give it another look. I don't agree with you that safety comes first and maybe it's just best to spend the $ and have someone come in and look at it. Would it be possible that the switch possibly got wet?

  • guild47 Mar 23, 2011

OK, Rick. I was able to get the top open and all of the wires are connected. I think at this point it would be best to get a tech in here because I really haven't a clue when it comes to this stuff. Thanks for all your help.

    The solution was extremely helpful.

  • guild47 Mar 23, 2011

I'm going to try using a blow dryer to see if that will dry any water that my have gotten in there. Other than that I'm going to call a tech to come fix it. Thanks again.

First check the switch to assure that the switch is not turned on secondly when you were cleaning this area did you happen to knock one of the wires that goes to an ignitor off is the clicking coming from just one burner or is it coming from all burners usually if it were coming from all burners this would indicate a bad switch that has arched on the inside of the switch by the switch doing this it consistently lets power go through the switch which causes the ignitor to try to light the burner even when there is no gas flowing if you have any further questions message me back and please remember to rank how this opinion has helped in your appliance situation when our chat has fully concluded Thanks for using Fixya
Rick
p.s if it is a switch issue unplug the unit or shut off the breaker until you have ordered the new switch lastly you would check your spark modulator the spark modulator is found as part number 5 on this diagram http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/partsdirect/showSubComp.pd?imageUrl=http%3a%2f%2fc.searspartsdirect.com%2flis_png%2fPLDM%2fM0308129-00002.png

yes you would need to take apart the unit to acces to see where the ignitor wires plug into each ignitor from the switch my personal feeling is that it is a wire that has come loose and is grounding although i never leave out the possiblility of having a bad switch you need to use a multimeter if you have checked all wires going from all switches to the ignitors upon closer inspection i think you will find one wire is at fault i personally have had the same issue years ago with a ge cafe model in which all were sparking and after doing the proper testing and taking apart the switch i found that the inside of the switch had arced to the other side of the switch making the switch constantly open on your case though because you were cleaning around the area and then it started i would tend to lean towards a wire that is not connected properly you would have to take that top panel off in order to properly inspect where this wire has come disconnected from if you are unable to perform electical tests or feel you are not able to do this I would suggest that you call a technician it is always safe when it comes to electricity to use the safety first type of thinking if you have any further questions message me back and please also remember when our chat has fully concluded to rank how this opinion has helped Thanks again

when i said safety comes first i meant your safety comes first and that if you are not used to doing repairs involving electrical components that you should call a technician and yes if water got inside of the switch while the unit was plugged in this could cause a switch to short on the inside of the switch if you have any more questions message me back I await your reply Thanks Rick

I have a very old Magic Chef gas cooktop. One of the burners lost full strength. I cleaned out the pinholes on the stem but this didn't help. Do you have any suggestions?

Have you had a spillover? Lift the burner cap the round thing on top of the burner then pull out the burner you might see a small hexagonal brass thing with a hole in the centre if it's blocked clean it with some acetone/ nail polish remover.

I have a Chef 4 burner gas cooktop probably at least 10 years old. I need to replace 3 burner knobs. One works fine. Where can I find replacements? I live near Perth, Western Australia.

In the US, there is a parts distributor with locations all over the country. Their number is 1-800-482-6022. They have four of your burner knobs (part number 74001253) in stock in the Fresno, California warehouse. The cost per knob is $9.27 US. I can't say how much the shipping would be, but they use UPS and FED EX.
Good luck....and good day.

Back burners wont light

Remove the back burners top lids and using a good blower jet and a good brush clean up the areas around it. this must allow the mixing of the gas properly. try to light. if this wont solve you will need to open the front flow controller, remove the knob, check from within after opening the top lid for the jet screw, open and clean and use a pin for cleaning. reset the flow controller after checking for gas flow into the flow controller. now set back and the burner should light up. Hope this helps you out. Good day

1 Answer

REAR RIGHT AND LEFT FRONTBURNER WON'T IGNITE

The most common problem for gas surface burners is that they get gas but don't light. This is generally caused by dirt or grease splatters on the burner itself. Residential-grade range/stove burners are round and have small holes around their perimeter to allow gas to flow out and create a round flame. The gas coming from these holes is often ignited by a small vertical row of holes on the side of the burner. If these vertical holes are clogged or obstructed, the gas can't ignite.

The solution is to clean the burners thoroughly. Use a toothpick to clear the small vertical holes, then allow the burner to dry completely and try lighting it again. If it doesn't light immediately, repeat the procedure

Magic chef rv oven burners work fine oven pilot hard to get lit and when it does lite the oven burner will not lite can you help me

thromo stat bad the tempature knob has a gas valve attached to it along with two gas lines you will have to remove the oven to acess all lines as they run on the backside of the case remove the burners and gas input line copper line remove gas supply tube to all burners remove valve and take to dealer they need the numbers off the vavle for exact repacement not just the numbers off the stove itself east fix with simpl hand tools thermost has a themocouple attached to burner assembly and this is your problem bad part is themocouple is built into thermostat and is no serviceable only fix is to replace "thermostic gas valve"
