Remove the center caps of the rear wheels then use a 13mm wrench on each side and loosen the bolts for the rear wheels, when loose remove the wheels and axle, then remove the red pin on the fron of the bed, then the two black pins on the rear of the bed, then lift the bed off, then lift the green plastic panel off this will expose the motors then, disconnect the wires from the motor and remove the two screws that hold the gearbox in place then take the gearbox and motor assembly out then remove the two screws that hold the motor to the gear box

SOURCE: John Deer Gator only drives in low gear.

Sometimes the levers go bad in the shifter, but I would first check the shifter to make sure the switches are engaging. You should also check the wiring on the motors in the rear. Sometimes they come loose and if they are not making a good contact the gator will not go in proper speeds.
You can get great help at http://www.shopjandl.com/mepu0002.html.
They have a toll free number and are very helpfull because the repair them as well.

!st gear won't work

I would replace the shifter assembly. It seems to be a better upgrade with the switches built into the shifter itself. It also has the wiring with it.
As long as the battery seems to work and the motors are going in one of the speeds, then there is not much to the vehicle.
It is a specific Peg Perego Switch assembly.
Hope this helps

My son's gator will not go in reverse anymore.....When we first got it it did but as soon as we removed the screw for 2nd gear, it stopped....why

The problem is with the red forward/reverse switch. The two speed switch only works once the red forward contacts are engaged. I had the same problem several years ago. Replace the red switch and you are good to go.
