Question about DVD/Blu-ray Drives

1 Answer

CD/RW and DVD Rom have disappeared and will not register

I saw a post from Feb where someone else is going through the same issues I am. One day I was sitting pretty with a working DVD Rom and a CD/RW. The next day - nothing. It does not show up in the Boot sequence and it shows a yellow exclamation mark next to the devices in the Device Manager. The troubleshooting tab won't work and I am unable to have it read or find a newer driver.

Per your reply to this other individual, you stated you may have some sort of program patch? If so, is it brand specific? I am working on a Dell; XP environment; Sony CDRW; Hitachi DVD Rom. If you still have it and think it may work for me - I would love to get it from you. I am absolutely at my wits end. Any help you can provide would be greatfully accepted. ~ Maria (jimmieandmaria@gmail.com)

Maria,

Have you searched Microsoft.com for a solution to your disappearing optical drive? First (from my own experience only) see if there is an ERROR CODE (i.e. code 39 or 41, etc) in your Windows XP Device Manager.... For this code #, open (double-click) Properties in Device Mgr. If not already, you'll find info online about removing upper- and lower filters from your Registry. BUT (good news!) Microsoft.com does have an Automated Repair for this maneuver which is ultra-easy----simply download the Fix, follow its simple wizard, and restart Windows. Hope it works as quickly and flawlessly for you as it did for me (also on a Dell running XP at the time).

I have problem with my new laptop MSI CR420. The DVD/CD RW ROM drive can't read from CD, it's just can read from DVD. So can you help me to solve this problem....

I am going to provide troubleshooting steps to try fixing this problem, since the disc drive can still read DVD disc its no longer a hardware issue, so im thingking this might be a software issue and the steps below might help you fixing this.

- click start > run and type "regedit" w/o qoutes
- once you access the REGISTRY EDITOR kindly open therse folder (each folder contains another folder) make sure to follow the below steps carefully.
- go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
- insed the "class" folder look for {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} it is the CD/DVD rom drive.
- at the right part of the registry delete "upper" and "lower" filters name
- once done close the registry.
Go to device manager
- click start > run > type "devmgmt.msc"
- click the + sign beside CD/DVD drives
- right click and select properties
- go drivers tab
- and then select the button uninstall the driver
- RESTART THE COMPUTER
After restart all should be fine now.

I have a IBM thinkpad that has a cd drive only. Is there a way to take out the cd drive and install a drive that is for cd's and dvd's. If so, how would I go about doing that and how much would it cost?

Hi, what it the model of your DVD? Please the correct driver here : www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/TPAD-MATRIX.html

Other tips : CD and DVD drive troubleshooting
  1. Verify the disc media used.
Try multiple original discs (not burned copies) which are clean and free of scratches. See Information about CD and DVD media.
Note: Dark colored discs such as black may be more difficult to read.

  2. Verify that the disc is seated properly in the CD-ROM, CD-RW, or DVD drive.

  3. Verify that the drive is seated properly in the ThinkPad system by reseating the drive.
If another similar machine is available, then verify that the drive works in the other machine and that the other drive works in this machine.
    Notes:
    • The CD-ROM, CD-RW, or DVD drives cannot be removed in ThinkPad G40 and R50e systems.
    • Shut down, remove the power cord, and remove the battery from the ThinkPad system before removing the CD-ROM, CD-RW, or DVD drive.

Problem with DVD/CD-Rom drive

Right click on the device name and select properties and you'll open a window with access to enable the device or open the troubleshooter.
Sometimes if you disable, reboot and enable plug & play will reinstall the device.
If your drivers have been corrupted you may be able to roll them back and then update once the drives are working.
You might want to take a trip to windows update and see if it will detect the error and offer you a fix.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take a moment to kindly rate this post....thanks!

Dvd-rom trouble

Hi, first of all, I'd check if you have the problem with CD/DVDs burned (written on a CD/DVD writer) or you have it also with original CD/DVDs, which would be weird. Depending on your finding to the above point I'd do one thing or another, but to me does not look like a driver problem. I'd check with Toshiba support if there's a new firmware for your drive, this does improve the media the device can read and correct problems like the one you mention. To know the fimware version you're using, open device manager and go find your drive, right click on it and choose details tab. Normally the firmware revision is the number at the end of the instance. Good luck mate !

Samsung DVD Rom drive SD 612B

Its a dvd-rom drive. READ ONLY MEMORY.

That drive will not burn a dvd...it has to say dvd-r/dvd-rw.
or be referred to as a super drive.

Hope this helps.
