Question about Vacuums

KitchenAird KSM 500 stopped because of heavy flour. Wife restarted it and it makes a metallic noise and then stops. My search indicates it might be worm gear. Any suggestions. I live in No. VA--any sugestions for small appliance repair places..

The mixer does work once my wife cleared the up the mixing bowl. I ran it for about 10 seconds but turned it off for fear of further damage. Isn't it likely to be the sorm gear since it's designed to fail to save the metal gears?

  • ibyke Mar 29, 2011

Your solution was incorrect. Using a video on you tube for guidance, I replaced the worm gear and the mixer works perfectly. I used parts readily available to retail customers for a job that wasn't complex. It took me almost 2 hours because of a couple of solvable obstacles and because I keep reviewing the video.

Yes, most likely the gears have been stripped, they will have to be replaced. This is a complex job and the parts aren't available to retail customers - they will have to be specially ordered. It's better to take the unit to a repair shop.

No, there are no sacrificial parts inside it. Actually there are just 5 rotating parts: the rotor of the electrical motor with the worm screw machined in it, the worm gear with the planetary shaft attached to it, the planetary gear and the tool shaft attached to it. So either one of the gears was stripped or one of the bearings got deformed. Either way it must be replaced.

Stopped working

This is a problem with your carbon brushes, remove old brushes, and check they have not become jammed in there brass sleaves, they are spring loaded.
If they are not jammed but less than 20mm new brushes are required, available from most good vacuum stores.
Before purchasing spin the motor, and feel that the copper commutator, where the brushes contact with, is not buckled (not even slightly)
NB Buy genuine Numatic they go back in better.

Sometimes while I'm vacuuming, the front of the vacuum makes a horrible noise. If I lift up the front end, it stops. Any ideas?

I just cleaned the small metal drive gear inside the brush housing. That solved my problem. It seems that some junk can build up in the drive gear which makes the belt slip on the gear. That is horrible noise you are hearing.

Kenmore upright vac model 33922 - good suction but developed loud whining noise after accidentally vacuuming room without bag. Added bag and changed both filters. Still makes noise. How can I stop noise?

The bag is the first stage in your filtration. Most times what you did will draw fine dust right through the filters and into the motor itself, affecting the bearings and clogging the motor fans, throwing them off balance.
The fact that there is a new noise would seem to indicate bearing problems which will only worsen unless the vac motor is dismantled, fans cleaned and bearings either replaced or cleaned and repacked.

Electrolux Canister - Stops working after 1-2...
Our vac works for a short time, then shuts off and makes clicking noise as if trying to restart again. Works after cooling for a while but for another very short time. Your suggestion on fix would be greatly appreciated.

I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure
I would advise that it could be a thermal switch or a regular switch that the thermal switch is over heating and needs replacement – there are small hoses in the door section that could have been pinched or kinked and it stopping the air flow from the vacuum – also check for a clogged or plugged vacuum hose, a full vacuum bag or a dirty vacuum filter. Check the thermal switch or reg switch or the hoses in the door. Or feel free to contact your local vacuum dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or call the factory @ the phone number listed below: Customer Service
