The Hard Drive is most likely formatted for the Mac and not for PC, so Windows won't see the drive and the files.

The most convenient way to keep your files would be to take the drive to a friend that has a mac or borrow one, and remove the files from the drive and put them in a temporary folder on to the borrowed mac.

Then through Mac's Disk Utility format the drive for FAT (Windows).

When that is done, you can then put the file from the temporary folder back onto the drive.

The PC then should now recognize the drive and the files.

External hard drive used on mac,how do i use it on pc?

You need to format this hard drive using your PC.
If the hard drive was formatted using the MAC then the PC won't see anything on the hard drive because the MAC uses a different file system that is not compatible with the PC.
BUT if you want to exchange files between the MAC and the PC then format the hard drive using the PC in FAT32 file system. The MAC can read and write to a FAT32 formatted hard drive.

Error code -36 when I put files from external HD to another external HD

Are the external drives formatted using the same file structure?
If one is FAT and the other is NTFS, for example, Macs might complain.
Are you copying files to a drive you use with a PC?

Attach your external HD with some other computer, that will definitely appear normal, the problem is due to a virus in ur HD. Your computer's antivirus software stops it to appear. Back up your data on the other computer, format ur external HD, remove un-necessary files and run a virus scan to the files u copied from HD, Hope this will solve the problem, if not, let me know and tell me what would be the response on the other compuer

Mac OS X 10.4.11 SimpleDrive 1TB HD appears on Desktop only occasionally. Does not appear in Disk Utility. Have transferred files to it, light is on, plugged in, just takes several restarts to appear.

If you unplug the power and USB cables from the drive (but not the computer), plug in the power and then plug in the drive, the Mac will remount the drive on the desktop. I am having the same issue, only my old HDD used to be my TimeMachine drive and now I want my SimpleTech drive for that. The issue is that when the SimpleTech drive disappears, OS X automatically uses my old HDD for TimeMachine and all my disk space vanishes.

Very ARRGH!!!

I'm trying to find a better solution, because having to mess with the cables means it's no good for TimeMachine... and very frustrating on top of it.

1Terabyte WD HD connected to a mac. Can't copy big archives.

Did you use the default formatting, which is likely to be PC-style FAT32. There are other DOS-like partitions that cannot use big files nor many of them. Even this is limited.
Assuming you are only using this on a Mac you would be advised to change this to Apple File Partition for older machines and pre-10.4 or GUID for Intel Mac. Either can use "Journaled HFS+" as recommended. -Ken

Help retrieving files from simpletech 320gb hard drive!

I have to admit I haven't used a Mac since high-school, but I can tell you that my first thought on this problem was "file system".

Most external HD's are formatted to be used on a Windows PC, and many are even formatted as NTFS. If this is the case, last I heard anyways, Mac OS doesn't support NTFS.

My suggestion is to use either machine to format the external HD (**you will lose all data on it**) as a neutral file system. By that I mean one which will work on both operating systems.

I could be wrong about this, and Mac OS may support NTFS, but if that's the case somone will be kind enough to correct me.

Hi Doug,

The problem is that mac has a diffrent 0perating system to a pc the thing you doing by switching from mac to pc the external hard drive is conflicting with one another to make your external driver to work on your pc follow these steps. go into control panal, system, hardware, device manager, universal serial bus controllers, drivers then update drivers that should reconise your mass storage driver.

Maxtor 300GB--can't delete or write

You didn't specify if the original PC was Windows or MAC.

Is this USB external used on a PC with Windows? If so is it formatted NTFS? If so, Mac OSX and pretty much everything else but windows NT, 2k and XP can not write to NTFS. OSX and Linux will read an NTFS partition but at this time not write to it. If your drive is formatted NTFS, I would say, go to a windows machine and convert it to a FAT 32 Partition. Most everything will both read and write to FAT32.
