SOURCE: my murray 17 hp 42 inch cut hydrostat mower will

Hydrostat transaxles are very picky like the trans in your car. It must have clean fluid and be full of fluid. I am not saying to fill that transaxle to the top but make sure it is to the top of the fill line. Also it needs to be changed every few years and keep it clean to help it stay cool. If it has a filter make sure to change it when you change the fluid in the transaxle. That fluid is nothing more than 20-50W motor oil.

If there is a dip stick add some oil check the level till you get to the full mark. It should take a little more than a quart. If there is no dip stick then there is an oil fill plug down low on the engine. Fill slowly until the oil reaches the threads in the engine housing (almost overflowing). Be sure to replace the plug or you will have oil everywhere when you start it.

Don't just dump the oil in, check the level as you go!

Rideon was under flood idrain engine oil do i have drain gaer and biff oil as well. and what oil do i replace gear oil with.

Yes, you do have to drain the gearbox and diff as well, because the oil in them will also have water in it. For the gearbox, use SAE 90, Gear oil. The diff will use the same oil. Don't forget to clean or replace the spark plug, and clean the Carby.

Have an older Murray, 38

You need to see if it is getting spark. You can buy a spark tester. You remove the spark plug wire and hook one end of the tester on the spark plug wire and the other end to the spark plug. Crank the engine and see if the tester flashes. Another way to check if you don't have a tester is to insert a screw driver in the spark plug wire and hold the screw driver about 1/16th of an inch or less from the head of the engine and have someone crank it over. You should see a spark jump from the screw driver to the engine. Make sure you're holding the plastic handle of the screw driver or you may feel the shock yourself. If there's no spark, then your mag is bad.
