Hi!!
What tells the gas valve to open is the thermocouple, the small copper tube connected to the valve on one end and on top of the pilot's flame the other end. When the pilot detects flame, it sends a small electrical signal to the valve to keep it open. If thermocouple is faulty, it won't send the right signal. This is the most likely cause of your problem. These run about $10 depending on the Fryer model and is very easy to replace. Installation instructions come with the new unit. Alot of thermocouples are interchangable and can be bought at hardware stores and gas/propane supply stores. If the thermocouple doesn't do the trick then the only thing left is your gas valve, but I bet it is the thermocouple, sometimes you can revive them if they are charred. Use some emory cloth and polish the old one up and it may work.
Good Luck!! A HELPFUL, 4 THUMBS UP rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa!!

I wish I could see what other have told you before I post a repeat of the same posts. If the thermocouple is good, then it is the gas valve. There isn't anything else as long as you have the correct pressure from the tank to the valve, I assume you have a regulator in the line, but these don't go bad that often. But they are a cheap replacement if you want to try before you replace the valve. If you gas is cold you may have low pressure from the tank.

Hi, sometimes it may require you to hold down on the pilot knob on the gas valve for a couple of minutes after you light the pilot. Thermopile get weaker with age. If this does not do the trick then replace the thermopile.......

I still suggest you change the thermopile because the one you are presently using may still be working but weak....

Hi, then there must be something tripping it off. It's either a switch problem or an electrical problem. I will suggest you check the electrical connection, the element inside the fryer and the switch one after the other to know where the problem is emanating from because ordinarily it is normally a thermopile problem....

Pilot light won't stay lit after releasing when lighting gas fryer

This symptom indicates something wrong with the millivolt system. Start by checking the wires from the thermopile to the gas valve, insuring they are all tight and in place. Check the hi limit thermostat, if you have an ohm meter it should read .1 or .2 across it. With you meter set to dc millivolts, and flame present on the pilot, read across the thermocouple wires (red and white) to see the millivolts generated, with the thermostat off and the gas valve in pilot position you should get approx 600 millivolt plus minus 50. The pilot will have to be on for a minute or so to get maximum millivolts. If the millivolts are correct, hi-limit closed, and all wiring is connected, you likely have a faulty gas valve. If the hi limit reads more than .1 or .2 replace the limit, if you are not getting the millivolts from the thermopile, replace it.

Imperial IFS-40 fryer. Pilot is lit, but buriners won't come on when the temp dial is turned from off to any degree.

Sounds like your thermostat is bad? We could order you one, however in order to get you a price, I need the serial number also. These are very common fryers, our best seller by far and a good fryer too. But, things happen, and the thermostat is the most common part that is replaced after some time....
Our phone is 888-542-5959, Restaurant Equipment Outlet, Cincinnati, Ohio. We ship parts in 1-2 days, and I can get you a price in a few minutes time, if you call or email me. Thanks, Susan REO

Fryer IFS 40. Burner not getting on.

If the pilot light stays lit then there is no problem with the thermocouple. What you have is a problem with the thermostat or the gas valve operator. try jumping the thermostat wires and see if the gas comes on. If so simply replace the thermostat.

Imperial fryer IFS-40

I had a very simular problem. My fryer would do exactly as you described, but sometimes the pilot light would stay on until the burners tried to re-ignite and then it would go out.
I finally had to call the gas company. They took the pilot light apart and cleaned it. The fryer works perfect now.
Hope this helps!
