I have a WD MyBook & a Vista Windows OS. I've only used the MyBook a few times but all I ahd to do was plug in the USB cord and it would show up in My Computer. Now it doesn't. I've tried deleting the INFCACHE.1 file. I've tried using a shorter USB cord. I've tried looking up the USBSTOR.inf file but it doesn't seem to exist in my pc. I've tried unplugging the USB cord from the MyBook for a good hour. Nothing has worked. Solutions?

You just responded..."Go to COMPUTER right click go to MANAGE click on it. Go to the left and down to DISK MANAGEMENT. This might help you. Also you could try going to western digitals website and downloading the driver. "

Do what when I go down to Disk Management?

The last expert told me to go to Disk Management, but did not tell me what to do when I get there.

Somehow this got listed under a different product. I am trying to get advice regarding the MyBook Essential Edition. http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Bo...

I think it has something to do with this:

Q: Why is the drive not recognized under My Computer or on the computer desktop?

A: If your system has a USB 2.0 PCI adapter card, be sure that its drivers are installed before connecting your

WD USB 2.0 external storage product. The drive is not recognized correctly unless USB 2.0 root hub and

host controller drivers are installed. Contact the adapter card manufacturer for installation procedures.

I found the info above in the troubleshooting manual for the MyBook. How do I find out if my "USB 2.0 root hub and host controller drivers are installed"?

I just tried Uninstalling & reinstalling with no luck.
    Found this in MyBook Manual:

How do I figure out if the "USB 2.0 root hub and host controller drivers are installed"?

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. You can figure out if the usb host controller 2.0 is installed by connecting a usb device on your computer and it will detect it. Usually you just need to install the chipset driver for it. If you have other usb device check if the computer can detect it. Please provide the information below.

- Can you hear the drive spinning?

- If not, is it buzzing or beeping as if trying to spin up?

- Did you drop the enclosure?

- Did you overvolt it with the wrong AC adapter?

If you are using Windows, can you see the enclosure with Microsoft's UVCView utility?

I believe it should be detected as a mass storage device.

Please provide me the result so that i can interpret it to you.

If you have questions please let me know. Thanks for using Fixya

If it does not show, either your MYBOOK had viruses or the files there are corrupted. Do not attempt to delete any files coz maybe it is part of its system.

If there is a viruses, normally it will not connect to your pc. But try to open the MY COMPUTER AND use the address bar coz sometimes your MYBOOK drive appear there. If you successfully open the external HDD, run the antivirus software to your HD.

If system file is corrupted in the HD, try to get the installer for MYBOOK and install it to your computer. But did you try to connect your MYBOOK to other computer? If not, do it because maybe your PC had problems and not the MYBOOK?

It is not regarding USB issue, in disk management. You can view your WD hard disk and you can reformat as well your HDD.

Same F-ing issue!

If you're running an older version of Windows, say, 98 or ME, you may need drivers for the device. Check the packaging contents for a CD with software for these versions of Windows.
Else, there may be different reasons for this to happen. If you're connecting the device to a USB port on your PC, you may need to disconnect and reconnect it a few times to check for specific sounds.
When Windows (or any late OS) detects a device is being connected/disconnected hot, it emits a sound. Do you hear any sounds when you do this? If you do, the next thing that should happen is that a window pops up asking what you wish to do?
If your device is virgin, ie: there's no data on it, you should still experience these things.... UNLESS...
You're connecting the device through an external USB hub that lacks a power supply. Some devices may overload the hub's USB ports, rendering them useless, thus, the failure.
Try connecting the device directly to your PC to see whether that fixes the problem.
If not, then try the following:
Go to your File Explorer and click on Computer. All the drives should show, including the external one. Try pressing the F5 key a few times to see if that causes a refresh of the screen.
If this too fails, call WD and tell them about your problem.
Good luck!

Using Windows Vista Suddenly can't see WD MyBook 500G

I had a problem with MY Book and I found out that if you plug the drive into a power strip it doesn't receive enough power, so it doesn't show up on Vista, but if you turn everything off and then plug the My Book directly into a wall socket, Vista will see it and put an icon in the My Computer area.

I recently purchased a Dell XPS 420 Desktop computer, running Vista, from Dell, including a WD 500GB MyBook external hard drive. The power button did not function from the get-go, but I was able to copy...

Unfortunately if there is no driver for Vista, then your out of luck. Since Vista is a widely used OS and getting bigger, then the MyBook manufactures must create a Vista driver soon or they will be in danger of going out of business. Just wait and periodically check the MyBook website for new drivers.

WD My Book Essential -- Can't find drivers

It should not really need drivers in Win2K or Vista, you might have a problem with your USB drivers. Go into device manager, remove any devices under the USB heading and reboot. All the drivers should reinstall and hopefully your MyBook will come alive again. Otherwise, try the MyBook on a friend's computer, if it doesn't work there then the MyBook may be faulty itself.
