Question about Gateway MD7820U (L-LX.W730X.007) PC Notebook

1 Answer

Battery won't charge. It's a Sanyo AS07B31 Lithium Ion battery. When I took it out and put it back in, it momentarily charged (a few seconds). The icon reads that the battery is 87% available (plugged in, not charging); current power plan - balanced. When I unplug, my laptop shuts down (no power). Now the power indicator shows 0% power and not charging. I bought a new battery and it won't charge at all. Tried to recallibrate in bios but it says to abort immediately - over voltage. This is with the battery that came with the computer. When I try to recallibrate the new battery it says it doesn't recognise the battery. It seems to me that it might be an electrical problem. Gateway support recomments reinstalling OS! Ya right! Thanks for the help. Any one else ever have this problem? Any recommendations?

How often do you charge a laptop

Frequent Charging Shortens Battery Life

Frequent charging shortens the life span of a Lithium ion battery. Batteries should be charged only after they expend all their power.

Switching Batteries

Switching batteries helps preserve battery life: If a cell phone or computer user puts in a spare battery while separately charging the primary Lithium ion battery, that helps extend the life of both batteries.

Removing Batteries

Most laptops charge the battery when a user plugs in the AC adapter. Users can adjust this setting by changing the power options. Windows places this option in the Control Panel, while the Gnome Linux desktop places power options under "Administrative Tools". Cell phones incorporate their own power-saving features that the user usually cannot control.

When to Replace a Lithium Ion Battery

If a laptop battery does not hold a charge for more than a few minutes, a user must replace the Lithium ion battery if he wants to use the computer without an AC adapter.

Other Ways to Extend Battery Life

Storing a battery in a cool, dry environment causes a lithium-ion battery to last a little longer and reduces the frequency of needed battery replacements.

Dewalt lithium battery won't charge

Your problem states you have a Makita tool and your question is about a Dewalt lithium battery. In either case if the battery won't take a charge or if the charger is showing the battery is defective the only fix is to replace the battery. Some causes for defective batteries or batteries that won't take a charge are bad cells in the battery, bad or shorted IC board in hte battery, broken or burnt connections between the many cells or between the cells and IC board or even bad or old cells that will no longer charge up. The time and effort needed to find out what the problem is then finding another battery to scavenge parts from (individual battery parts are not available) is never worth the cost of just buying another battery and going back to work with the tool(s).

I just bought the Lithium - ion batteries for replacement for my 18.0 volt ni-cad battery. when I put it (ion battery) in the charger (ni-cad charger) no lights come on. what's up?

Lithium Ion batteries don't charge the same way ni-cads or ni-mh do. You need a lithium ion specific charger to charge them. (Some chargers do multiple types.)

Two brand new Hitachi BSL1815X Lithium Batteries won't recharge (UC18YGSL charger and DS 18DSAL drill)

These batteries have big problems that Hitachi doesn't address very well. Unlike NiCad batteries, Lith-Ion ones must be periodically used and recharged to retain their battery functions, i.e. if they have been sitting on the shelf at a store for an extended period of time, chances are they will be dead when bought and will not accept a charge. If they go dead i.e. no little red light on the charger when you plug the battery unit in...it's basically junk.

If you can return them or exercise the warranty do so. If / when you get new ones DO NOT completely discharge them like you would NiCads. Lith-Ion batteries do not have the "battery memory" issues that NiCads have which means you don't lose running time if you don't fully discharge the battery unit prior to recharge. Completely discharging before recharge will ultimately kill them. Use the 1815X till almost dead and then charge it. It is also recommended Lith-Ion batteries not be stored fully charged i.e. charge the 1815X fully, drive a couple bolts or screws, remove the battery unit and then put it away. Do not leave battery unit plugged into the tool when you put the tool away. This will discharge and kill the battery unit.

There are non-Hitachi substitute batteries now on the market. I'm guessing the same precautions apply but I don't own one of the replacements so I don't truly know.

The actual batteries in the Hitachi BSL 1815X are Sanyo UR18650SAX lithium ion batteries. Lithium Ion cells aren't all that easy to get commercially because of handling & safety requirements. Not certain if you can take apart the 1815X and swap out the bad Sanyo cells.
