Your command is slightly flawed. Try again as follows, making sure to include all spaces (copy and paste the command if it'll help)

sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils start

Note the space between sudo and /etc/blahblah and the space between /etc/blahblah and start. Also note the occlusion of the second L to the end of the alsa-utils command.

Hope this helps,

Will my cyber acoustics ac-850 silver work with my ubuntu laptop? do I need drivers?

This should help you.
Solution:

1) Edit the file "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base". Use the command:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

At the bottom of this file there is a section entitled "Prevent
abnormal drivers from grabbing index 0" and the following line:

options snd-intel8x0m index=-2

Comment out that line like so:

# options snd-intel8x0m index=-2

2) Select "System" -> "Preferences" -> "Sound" and at the bottom
of the menu, for "Default Sound Card", select "USB Device xxxx"
where xxxx is a numerical designation of your Cyber Acoustics
driver.

3) Reboot.

I downloaded VLC for ubuntu but i couldn't install it

The reason for that could be because some of the dependencies have not been met.
You can try these methods:
First the easy one: Click on the link below:
http://ubuntu-tweak.com
Then click on the download now button. Actually this will download and install the ubuntu tweak program.
Once you have this installed, go to System tools and then to Ubuntu tweak from there.
Once ubuntu tweak opens, click on the application center. On the right hand side you will see a list of programs. Check whether VLC player is on the list. If yes. select it and click apply. Most chances are that it will install the VLC.
Else: Move on to the the Terminal.
Open a terminal.
Copy and paste the commands below:
sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/jaunty.list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
---------------------------------------------------------
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update
---------------------------------------------------------
sudo apt-get update
---------------------------------------------------------
sudo apt-get install non-free-codecs
-----------------------------------------------------------
sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 libxine1-ffmpeg gxine mencoder
---------------------------------------------------------
sudo apt-get install vlc mplayer

------------------------------------------------------------
I have drawn some lines to separate the individual commands. Especially the first one is long and may confuse, where one command starts and end.
Hope this helps. Don't give up on ubuntu. If you are beginner, it may look difficult for a week or so. Then you will find it is way better than windows. Try Xine media player also. And K3b for burning disk.

How to cteate ftp in ubuntu in my lan give me step by step process ....plz help me

1.Install a program called vsftpd. In order to do this, open up a command line and type sudo apt-get install vsftpd. You will be required to type in the root password and after that, just follow the instructions vsftpd gives you in order to install it.

2.Change the configuration file. Get to the file browser and type /etc. Next scroll down and double click on a file called vsftpd.conf. Remember that lines that start with a '#' are commented out:
  1. Disable anonymous access: Change the "anonymous_enable" setting to NO
  2. Change the "local_enable" setting to YES.
3.Restart the FTP server to enable your changes: in a shell window, type: sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd restar
t

4.Place the files you want to serve in the FTP Home Directory (~ftp).

You need to add the following lines to /etc/apt/sources.list file or you need to make sure you have enabled Universe and multiverse repositories in /etc/apt/sources.list file
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Make sure you have the following two lines save and exit your file
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy universe multiverse
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy universe multiverse
Now you need to run the following command to update the source list
sudo apt-get update
Install mplayer using the following command
sudo apt-get install mplayer
if you want to open mplayer just type
gmplayer
or
You can Open from Applications—>Sound&Video—> Mplayer Movie Player
Install libdvdcss2 and w32 video codecs in Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron)
Support for WMV, RealMedia and other formats has been bundled into the w32codecs package. This package is not available from the Ubuntu repositories due to licensing and legal restrictions.
For Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) Users run the following command
sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
Then, add the GPG Key using the following commands

For i386 Users install Codecs using the following command
sudo apt-get install w32codecs libdvdcss2

Using above download locations you can install most of the mutimedia codecs for ubuntu.
Mplayer Plugin for Firefox
If you want to install Mplayer with plug-in for Mozilla Firefox run the following command

No sound in ultimate 1.8

I had the same issue - I had system sounds but video/movies and music apps would not play sound.

This resolved it for me. I use OSS (open sound system) This command lets you choose your default sound system, so therefore the apps within Ubuntu know what to use to play sounds. =]

goto a terimal and type

sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-sound-base

Choose your sound system - By default for Ubuntu it is ALSA

G'luck

Ubuntu sound problem

Hi Josh

First of all check system setting.

It seems like your modules are not loaded, if you just installed, I recommend you to
re-install Ubuntu, if this is not the case, try to run -

sudo apt-get -f install

If everything fails, try this - sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils start
