Oval lid, what is the correct fit, should it be a tight fit, or my just sits on top, there is a small space around.

You should have a fit that has a little wiggle room, including a little space around the edge of the lid. When you cook in a slow cooker, you'll make a bit of steam, and it needs room to escape. A super tight lid would likely end up 'burping', and possibly spraying spurts of whatever your sauce is, across your kitchen. Having that small groove there also leaves you a space where a bit of steam can condense and either trickle back into the pot to keep things moist, or just sit there in the gap and not drip all over your counter. Having a little bit of give also means that if you cook and let things cool, the condensing steam won't create a partial vacuum and leave you having to plant a foot on the side of the crock pot to pull the lid off (likely with more spectacular spew-age ready for viral videos).

Cheers!

Leaking water/steam

If it is leaking around the lid, then it certainly sounds like a bad gasket -- the water vapor sould only come out the valve on the lid.

Fold a large piece of foil into quarters. Place foil over reservoir and firmly close lid. Open lid and massage edge of foil inside and out with finger to get a kind of cap. Remove foil and trim neatly around outer edge of lip. Fill reservoir with water, place cap on top and close lid. Make coffee.

Plastic lid lets steam escape - is this normal? will it effect cooking?

This site sells replacement rival lids. They have plastic and glass ones. I would suggest you measure you old one and order a new one in glass. The added weight of the glass should cure your problems. Thanks Kevin PS if this helped you pls leave feedback. Link is below just cut and past into your browser.
