Just install touch pad driver for the laptop model. If it still not working you will have to replace the hardware

Two must know usability tips for Mac Laptop users

Here are two general usability tips that every Mac laptop owner must know about. How to simulate a right click with your trackpad, and scrolling through documents much like a scrollwheel. I have long assumed these were common knowledge, but I’ve heard enough complaints and wishes and had to demonstrate them to enough people to prove otherwise. So if you don’t know about these two trackpad features, then you do now, and once you start using them, it’s impossible to go without.
  • Right Click with Trackpad - Hold two fingers on the trackpad while you use the click button
  • Scroll through pages a la Scroll Wheel with trackpad - Place two fingers on the trackpad and move them up to scroll up, and down to scroll down. Works horizontally as well.
If these features aren’t working for you, they are probably disabled. Here is how to activate them:

Note: Several of our readers have pointed out that these tips are not compatible with some older PowerBook and iBook models. However, a program called iScroll2 enables the scrolling ability on these models. Get iScroll2 here. Thanks to all who pointed this out!
To activate these options (assuming they are turned off), go to Apple menu -> System Preferences. Navigate to the ‘Keyboard & Mouse’ preference pane under Hardware. Click the Trackpad tab. Under Trackpad gestures, be sure that “Use two fingers to scroll” and ‘Place two fingers on trackpad and click button for secondary click’ are checked, as shown in the screenshot below. The scrolling on my msi netbook's trackpad isn't working, I keep sliding up and down the right side of the trackpad but nothing happens?

On the msi netbooks to scroll it doesn't work like most of the other netbook trackpads. The scrolling feature works like arrow buttons, you have to tap the top right corner to scroll up, or the bottom right corner to scroll down. It takes getting used to.

Where is the rtc battery located on an acer aspire 5517?

It's a little involved.............

All you have to do is completely disassemble the laptop, remove the motherboard, turn it over, and unsolder the Real Time Clock battery.

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-acer

Drop down to the subheading Aspire 1200. (1200 in Blue)
Go down to the subheading 5330 (In Blue), scroll across to 5517, and left-click on it.

This is the Service Manual in PDF file form. (Free)

(The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
After you click on the file name, {5517}, it may take up to 30 seconds, before the first page comes up )

Use the PDF file page number box at the top, and look at Pages 82 and 83.

You may want to have a professional replace the CMOS/RTC battery.
A Lithium battery is a bo-mb when exposed to high heat.

Clear a CMOS password? Ummm, no.
Why?
Because there is a capacitor, or capacitors, that hold a trickle charge for the CMOS password -> INDEFINITELY

There are two small copper pads that have to be briefly shorted out with a jumper wire. How small are these copper pads? Usually the size of this capital letter A.

Where are they located?
Manufacturers do not state, and you can bet Acer isn't about to.
Why?
Deters thievery.

Usually located under a small piece of Mylar plastic 'sheet', and under the Ram Memory module/s, ('Stick'), or under the wireless module.

[Do I worry about thieves receiving this info? No.
Bad karma begets you bad things happening to you, times 3.
Plus thieves are too lazy, and ignorant to try this ]

For additional questions please post in a Comment.
Regards,
joecoolvette

I cant find my volumen keys on my acer aspire 5517

The physical volume keys on many laptops are either represented in the function keys (e.g. F1, F2, etc.) or sometimes in the arrow keys (on some Acers).
To use the keys, you need to press the blue [Fn] key (that is usually by the CTRL key) and then press the volume key on the function/arrow key to increase or decrease volume. There should also be a mute key that can be used similarly.

Is there any way to adjust the sensetivity of the touchpad on my Acer laptop? I have the Aspire 5517 Series.

The Aspire 5517 use two types of touchpads. You will have to go to the control panel and get into the device manager and scroll down to pointing devices and see which one is installed on your system. If you look in the control pnel and look for the mouse properties, you should see in the mouse properties a setting tab. In the settings tab, you should see a listing for a touchpad. If you highlight that device, and click on the settings button, you will see a list of settings come up, in that list you will see buttons for setting the sensitivity of the touchpad as well as virtual scrolling, etc.
