Yes, you can, but why are you wanting to do it this way? If you don't have a safe/backup of a clean hard drive image you can insert your operating system disk into the CD-ROM and do a clean install from it to completely wipe all data on the hard drive (high-level reformat) then reinstalls the base operating system files on top of the hard drive. Otherwise on newer motherboards, you can boot from USB as well then format the drive from there.

Reformat hard drive in 11.10

You can not format your hard drive using it's on software on the same hard drive. Because your notebook does not come with a DVD rom or CD rom what you need to do is to get yourself an external DVD rom which you connect to the computer with a USB cable. Then you use the disc of the operating system that you want to use on that Notebook. When you reboot the operating system disc will be recognized and on the screen you will be asked to press any key if you want to run the disc. So you will press and follow the instructions the rest will take you to formatting the disc and loading the operating system.

I have replaced my hard drive but the back up discs I made are not working, I keep getting the error 'no partition'

You need to create a partition on your new hard disk and the format this partition as a NTFS partition.
You can use your Windows installation CD to create and format the hard disk and then install Windows plus the Acer laptop device drivers or quit Windows installation after formatting and then use your backup discs to restore your laptop.

I just bought a Moving Star external hard drive for my Mac laptop. It came with a driver installation disc, but the CD is too small and wont be taken in by my disc drive. I am afraid to put the install...

I would be tempted to format the drive using the disk utility whch can be found under applications and then utilities once opened choose your drive in the left hand window and the on the right hand side click on erase. Choose your volume format and name and then erase. Hope this helps.

I HAD WINDOWS ON MY ASUS EEE900. I HAVE RE-INSTALLED THE LINUX FROM THE BOOT DISC SUPPLIED WITH THE MACHINE IT LOADS OK AND THE MACHINE WORKS BUT IT WONT SHOW THE SECOND 16 GIG DRIVE. WHEN I GO INTO...

You should first (with or from a Windows CD) delete all partitions on all drives .... NON-DOS Partitions etc before you do the LINUX installation. The drives must be like when they were without any format or partition from the factory. Then only will the drive (all drives) be visible for linux to format with it's own information..

To reformat toshiba p300-1cn without recovery discs??

If you do not have a recovery partition, you will need to have some sort of bootable disc with an operating system on it. The reasoning behind this is that your computer cannot format a hard-drive it is currently running off of unless the hard-drive is partitioned and your OS is running on a partition that is not being formatted. I would recommend either getting windows recovery disks, or a copy of Ubuntu or such free Linux distributions for this action. After your Laptop is formatted it will have no Operating system and will not work until one is installed on it.

Emachine laptop hard disc is password protected

If it is a hard drive password, you don't. You will have to install a new hard drive, reload the operating system and all device drivers.

Compaq presario v3000 laptop..doesnt recongize the hard drive

I beleive that you are trying to install retail versions of XP which will not be able to detect the Hard Drive in the Notebook as it is a SATA drive and Windows XP will not be having the drivers for SATA Hard Drives by default.
In this situation, I recommend you to check and disable the SATA Native support  option available in the BIOS.
Start the Notebook and start tapping the F10 key which will take you to to the BIOS Setup window.
In this, go to the System Configuration tab using the Arrow keys and select the option as Disabled next to SATA Native Support.
Press the F10 key again to save the settings done and exit BIOS.
Now, you should be able to use the Windows XP disk and install Windows XP Operating System in your Notebook without any issues.
By disabling the SATA Native Feature, the Hard Drive of the Notebook will be detected as a IDE Drive because of which we will be able to install XP without any issues.

Donot Re-Enable this feature in the BIOS again as the Operating System may not boot. Let the option next to SATA Native Support be Disabled.
Hope this helps...
