The pump will usually run a little stream of water out at the rear, no worry about that...
The reason it will not shut off is because the float is stuck or the float is bad...
Tap on the float and make sure it can go all the way down...
If it still does not shut off then the float needs to be replaced..

Do I have to lengthen or shorten the length of the float cord on my sump pump if I want it to kick on sooner? Thanks

Shorten. By shortening the cord, the float will trip the switch at a lower maximum depth of water. The pump will run more often as a result, but the maximum water depth will be lower.

We have a submersible sump pump and a check valve in the line and everytime it goes off we get this thumping noise. Could it be a bad check valve?

A check valve is simply a one way flap, or a ball that rolls forward to let water flow in one direction. My guess is if it's making noise, either the pump is not producing an even pressure or the line is not properly secured and is hitting inside a wall. Make sure the line has straps every 3 foot and at any bends.

The pump keeps running

I had the same problem. After replacing the diaphram and switch I noticed a little pin hole that allows water into the diaphram area was phlugged. I cleaned it with a piece of wire and now works like a champ. Kept notes and spare parts taped to the pipe for further use.

Same issue, one of two pumps

I'm assuming the switch in Question is a Float-switch that is positioned in-line of the Power-supply to the Pump. The hinge that activates the switch inside the Float could be faulty. You can check it by connecting a dif-
ferent device to the plug, activate the switch
(Float upright) and deactivate (Float horizontal)
Mounting the switch with zip ties is a good
idea. The Float should be dangeling about 3"
above the Pumphead, thus keeping it submersed. Hope it helps.

Hammering sound at shutdown

it has a check valve to keep the water from going back into the pit when it shuts off, depending on how high the pipe goes up when it stops pumping the water closes the check valve in which the noise, unfortuintly there is no quick fix, even changing the check valve it could still make the sound

New water ace sump pump will run but willnot shut off

The higher you pump the water, the stronger your pump needs to be, or the skinnier your hose needs to be. A lower discharge point and / or a smaller diameter hose might help immensely.
