Where can I find a mode fault switch? Are there good tutorials somewhere on the web? I'm bench trained from the military many years ago, so I can do some of the work. I don't have an Oscope or other test equipment.

Hi, I have seen this fault a few times before in my shop, what usually happens is that a thing called the Mode Switch, faults and this then causes the symptoms that your unit is exhibiting.
It isn't a big repair job, and shouldn't cost too much. However often there are other problems when the MS faults, so one must get it checked out.
What you need to do, is contact a local or head office from Sony, ask them for a referral to an authorised, servicing center.
however, in any event, always ask first for a "Quote" before allowing any repair work to be done.

I have a used Sony SLV-920HF VCR that I am trying to set up. Every time I insert a tape it ejects it after a few seconds. Any idea why this happens?

There are two things that could be wrong. First damage to the carriage unit that holds the tape, which to me sounds most likely. The other a faulty or out of place mode switch, which could also could be caused by internal damage to any part of the mechanism.

Tape isn't retracted into cassette upon eject on Sony EV-C100

l would sacrifice a old or bad tape here, remove all the tape inside a cassette and tape off the small sensor holes on each side.

That way no tape to damage and you can insert it to see what is happening.

What likely is the issue is when stop it, it or if the tape does not fully load against the drum with heads, when the arms retract that pull the tape out of the cassette the mechanism is not switching to rewind it back into the cassette.

Usually this means a belt is slipping or the idler unit is not working---belts can break or stretch or even come off---belts will get slopply or bad from NO use and it is common.

Tape loaded normally but now won't eject. The unit just powers off after a few seconds.

Unplug the power from the combo unit and give it 30 seconds, now plug back in, sometimes this will eject the tape, if not! take the top off the machine and check to see if the tape is spewed in the mechanical section and around the video head, if yes! get a pair of scissors and cut the tape carefully to avoid damaging the video head and remove all tape deb-ri, now power up and eject the main cassette. But! if you find the cassette has loaded in place and the tape is still in the vhs cassette, this would indicate a loading problem with the main carriage, broken belt, bad idler assembly and possibly sensor issues.

Unit accepted cassette, won't eject

It is likely that either the drive belt has broken or is slipping. Because the unit is still in "play" mode, the mechanism won't let the door open up. If you have not opened up these units before, do not attempt it now. This unit should be taken to an experienced tech for repair. Where are you located?

Sony Cam DCR-PC100, "eats" tapes and when ejecting, pulls tape

The take up spool is not working upon ejecting. I would take it to a Sony Service Centre for service.

Unit in-op

When you first power the unit on, it performs its power-on self-test for about 30 seconds. When the tape drive is ready, the top LED turns off.

If you attempt to insert a cartridge into the
tape drive during the power-on self-test, the tape drive will eject the cartridge.

So, as long as it works after a few minutes, the unit is fine.

Sony SLV-940HF automatically ejects tape.

1st try a different tape.
If it's the same, listen carefully for unusual noises, clunks, grinding, etc. when the tape goes in. Is something binding?

With the tape out, look inside the door, see if you can spot anything in there that shouldnt be there such as a small toy, money, playing card, sandwich, bits of food? Those are the usuals.

Turn the vcr upside down and holding the tape door open, tilt it so if there was a foreign object in there, it would fall out.

Tape ejects just after insertion

the end-of-tape optical sensor is at fault. either it is very dirty, has failed or something else is detecting end of tape. many VCR's now will auto-eject the tape upon end of tape detect
