I have a JD Gt275 with the Kawasaki 17 HP FCV540V engine. I am not getting vacuum or pressure to run the fuel pump which is new. If I prime the carb it runs great until it uses the gas up, then it dies. I have replaced the filter and the vacuum line to the engine. The pump is not pumping at all. I know I have a vacuum leak somewhere. Where should I Look or do next.

SOURCE: I have an issue with my JD GT275. It won't start.

Hows the compression ? Has it been sitting ? It could have a stuck valve .What engine do you have ?Did you try putting a little gas in carburetor ? If so did it run a few seconds ? If so its a carburetor problem ! Remove and clean carburetor .You could also have water in gas this will cause the same thing you can look in the tank and if you see a bubble in the bottom its water needs to be cleaned out and bowl of carburetor also needs too be removed and cleaned,Try these and give me results, hope this helps !

SOURCE: Drive belt install on JD GT275

The bracket with loops keeps the belt in position when it is slack (disengaged). The bracket usually has to be loosened to even get the new belt on, the belt ONLY runs on the pulleys.

Hi
That is a fuel problem caused by stale gas you will need to remove and clean the carb with carb cleaner.

1984 S10 wont run fuel coming out at pump but doesnt seem to supply carb. has new filer. when primed it runs for a few seconds.

Is this a carbed engine, that usually means mechanical fuel pump? Take fuel line loose from carb, aim into container, crank engine, does gas flow? If so, have to check float bowl in carb to see if any gas, if no gas, need a carb kit in my opinion.
I don't know liter size of engine? If fuel injected, let us know.

I want to know if a tohatsu 2 stroke 5.8 hp outboard can work with external fuel tank?

Chris,

Yes it can. The built in tank will have a hose coming out of it and going to the carb. Disconnect the hose from the carb and connect a comparable size hose from the external tank to the carb. One thing to note, you will want to make sure the new tank to carb hose has a primer bulb on it. Engines produce vacuum while running which will draw fuel to the carb. However once shut off, the vacuum is lost and the line will need to be "pumped up" i.e. primed to get the fuel to the carb for startup.

Which way to turn the reserve tank switch on

There are 3 positions (as you probably know). Reserve, on and prime. Under normal conditions with a properly working fuel tap, prime is the by-pass that allows fuel to flow through without the engine running. On and reserve will only allow fuel to pass when the engine is running (uses vacuum from the carb).
  • PRIME has the handle facing down
  • ON is when it is facing the front
  • RESERVE when it faces the rear.
Do not leave the tap in the prime position EVER as this allows the fuel to fill the carb and with the engine running or attempting to start will cause hydrolock that will bend the pistons con-rods. Only use it to fill the carb with fuel and turn it to on or reserve as soon as you can.
If the bike runs using the prime position but will not run when on or reserve, then you may have a vacuum problem or a dodgy tap......assuming you have fuel that is.
Hope that helps.

Losing prime to carb after warm up

Check the fuel pump pressure. IF this is heat related, it could also be a bad gasket causing a vacuum leak. The other thing could be the fuel line is getting too hot causing the gasoline to create a vapor lock.

I am trying to get a JD riding mower with a 17 HP Briggs to run that has been parked for a couple of years. Ive replaced gas & filter, cleaned carb and verified fuel pump is working. It will only run if...

You need to soak the carb in a good carb cleaner for a couple of hours then blow all passages out with compressed air, this should dislodge any junk.
