Remove the P/W, check for bent spokes, clean the letters with small enclosed areas A.a.e,o etc. Try a fresh ribbon old ribbons tend to flake and fill.

CAUTION: Be advised, the use of compatible/clone ink cartridges (sold via the internet and usually made in China by 3rd party sources) are considered unreliable as the 'chips' are known to be problematic from time to time and can cause permanent PRINTHEAD failures due to incompatible ink formulations (see Buyer's Laboratory, Jan 2014 report). We do not suggest refilling these types of ink cartridges. Using and refilling of manufacturer's original/genuine ink cartridges is only suggested, otherwise permanent PRINTHEAD failures may result:

How do I clean the printer nozzles as it leaves streekes on printed pictures?

If the ink is smearing, it probably is not getting enough drying time. The ink drying time is a period of time inserted between pages to reduce the chance that a page will smear the one below it in the output tray. This time is factored into the time between when the first page finishes and when the next page finishes. Printing will pause temporarily if more time is needed. The time it takes for ink to dry varies greatly depending on paper type, printer driver settings, humidity, and temperature. In addition, the paper and print settings may affect the speed at which the ink can dry:
  • Transparencies require much longer drying times than other paper types.
  • Some store-branded photo papers do not allow ink to dry correctly because of the coatings used in their manufacture.
  • Printing in Best mode can increase the dry time.
Resolving the problem If the ink smears, increase the drying time. To increase the drying time in Windows, follow the steps below:
  1. When ready to print, click File , click Print .
  2. Depending on your driver version, click Properties , Settings , or Preferences and follow the steps below depending on the option.
    • For Properties or Settings , follow the steps below:
      1. Click the Advanced tab.
      2. In the Extra Dry Time section, move the slider toward More .
    • For Preferences , follow the steps below:
      1. Click the Basics tab.
      2. From the Basics tab, click Advanced Features .
      3. In the Extra Dry Time section, move the slider toward More .
  3. Try a sample print and see if the drying time needs to be increased more.
To increase the drying time for a Macintosh computer, follow the steps below:
  1. From the File/Print Menu , select Ink under the General tab.
  2. In the Dry Time section, move the slider toward More .
  3. Try a sample print and see if the drying time needs to be increased more.
Other steps that will reduce ink smearing If the ink still smears when printing, try some of the following suggestions:
  • Decrease the amount of time it takes for the ink to dry by decreasing the print quality to Normal or Fast mode.
  • Try printing on a different type of paper or on paper from another manufacturer. Paper formulas are different between manufacturers and may have a coating that causes the ink to be absorbed at different rates.
  • When printing large graphics or photos on plain paper in Best or Normal modes, improve the results by using heavier paper. Paper that is rated at 90 g/m2 (24 lb.) or higher will not curl or smear as easily as paper of a lighter weight.

I have a problem with ink smearing on Southland fine linen paper on letters I've sent out The letters are folded in three and put in an envelope. The reciepients are recieving the letters with smeared...

Sometimes it's due to low fusing temperature. Certain papers need higher temps. Check the paper supplier or look in the printer setup menus and adjust the paper type to as close as possible to what you have.

Letters are not aligned

It's possible that your printer has soiled alignment strips/wheels that are throwing out it's spacial awareness.

If you open the printer lid and check for a clear plastic strip (with fine black lines inked on it) at the back of the printer you may notice that one or more parts are soiled with some ink, dust or are worn away. If it's the latter you could have problems but usually something like this comes down to a bit of dust and ink smearing so a gentle (emphasis on GENTLE here!) cleaning should remove the crud and get you back up and running again.

Can't remember if there's a similar disk/wheel on the Epson models as there are in HP officejets so I'd advise looking carefully for other possible soiling, etc...

Hopefully that will help a bit though..

Best of luck

Martin

Some letters are not printing clearly. They are smeared. I just replaced the black cartridge. It seems that after a few pages it gets better and you don't see as much of it.

Please check the printer ink levels and if the ink level is fine and it still not printing then I will like to know type printer you are using, then I can carring on from there.

Printing

Check on your color (not mono) ink levels. If they are low, this could cause this.

Technical info: On this printer, envelope text is printed in "composite black" which means we mix the colored inks to make black. This is done for envelopes and not letters because of the ink properties which resist water and smear. If one of the colors is low, you'll get something other than black.

Print smear

It might be the fuser that is defect. perform a half paper path test. Let the paper get pulled in for half of it's length and open the cartridge door so printer stops, check the paper and see if issue is on the out print before passing the fuser. Also check that you have the power cord directly to wall socket and not using an extension cable that may reduce the current to the printer. Another tip can be to change paper type in the printing preferences to a heavier type ex. card stock wich have the printer to work slower.
