Plug in the drive and wait for Windows to recognize it. Right click on Computer (or My Computer in Windows XP) and click on Manage. Expand Storage (if it's not already expanded) and then click on Disk Management. Scroll down in the lower panel until you find your external dive in the list. Right click on the right column and select Format. Give the Volume a name like HP1TB or whatever you want to call it. Ensure that NTFS is the File System type. Check Perform a Quick Format. Then click OK. WARNING: THIS WILL DELETE ALL DATA ON YOUR DRIVE. Windows should ask if you want to assign a drive letter to the drive after it completes. If it doesn't just right click again on the right column and select Change Drive Letter.

I have a hp simple save external hard drive and it is not listing fat32 as a format

you have to use 3rd party tool windows build in disk management only allows you format 32GB to fat32. No matter which way you use you'd better backup your files, and then there is a software could format NTFS to Fat32 without data loss:

Copy past very slow on my pen drive

Backup your data first and then format your pen drive using the HP formatting tool that can be downloaded on the link below:

before formatting choose NTFS file system, test shows that copying large file to or from a flash drive is faster when NTFS file system is used.

Hope this helps.

I have an external maxtor 3100 , FAT format on windows XP NTFS format. Is there a way to format my external unit NTFS? Appreciate your thoughts.

The FAT format is easier to recover data from if things go wrong, but if you insist on making it NTFS, all you have to do is right click the drive, choose FORMAT and then specify NTFS as the format.
WARNING!!! This WILL ERASE all the data on the drive so back it up first!

16GB Flash Drive NTFS Formatting

what brand flash drive is this? some of the cruzer brand flash drives are partitioned to 2 drives. you may need to go to the manufacturers website and remove the partition with a 3rd party software. if it IS a cruzer, that software is on the larger of the two drives that show up when you insert the drive.
