Question about Frigidaire FFN15M5H Chest Freezer

1 Answer

My chest style freezer will not cool. This unit operated without issue for several years. We moved to a new house and did not want/need to use the unit for a year or so. When I plug it in I can hear a subtle noise from the compressor, but the freezer does not cool. There appears to be very few accessible components to troubleshoot. One of the electricians at work suspects that there is a switch stuck. Please advise. Thank you, Ian

Its the ptc overload relay on the side of the compressor body,it aids in starting the compressor by momentarily putting your start and run windings in parallel to overcome" locked rotor current",then drops out start windings after unit has come up to operating speed,it also protects the windings if the compressor cant start, they simply unplug off the compressor and the replacement plugs in the same, replace the capacitor connected to this if applicable as this protects the ptc's overload relay contacts

HI,my freezer runs fine, but I noticed where the motor side is,should there be a fan??,I feel no air moving.didn`t try to take off cover an look.an the freezer gets alot of ice at the top sides.thanks

Good day,
Unlike most refrigerators and upright freezers, they don't use a fan motor. The condenser coils are imbedded in the walls of the machine, and need no supplemental cooling.

As to the ice buildup, sounds as if the gasket isn't sealing well enough. You could try cleaning the gasket thoroughly, and check the alignment of the lid to the body.
Appliance parts houses carry a food compatible spray, which may help make the vinyl more pliable.
If that doesn't work well enough, then the only option is replacing the whole gasket.

With the model number, check with the supply house to see if the gasket is a replaceable style.

Chest Freezer MCCF7WBX.Magic Chef.. Worked fine for a 1.5 years. Compressor turned off & on to cool unit when needed. The way it should. Now it continuously runs. Unfortunately the warranty is out....

Good day,
Could be a tstat, but the machine should be running extremely cold.
Confused as to the age. You said it was 1 1/2 years old. If that is the case. the compressor, and all connecting tubing are under a 5 year factory warrant.
You could replace the tstat, and if within a few days the problem isn't solved, then the rest of the serious problems are covered by factory warranty.
Call your selling dealer for factory warranty service.

THE GREEN POWER LIGHT FLICKERS, AND COOLS ONLY WHEN THE FAST FREEZE POWER BUTTON IS TURNED ON

This sounds like the freezer stat is gone. If it is digital, there may be a power card issue but most chest freezers are run on a standard thermostat with the capillary running up into the base of the unit. Whilst sourcing the part, put a standard socket timer on to the plug to stop the unit running all the time.

Can a fridigidare fc5n chest freezer be recharged

If the unit's Compressor is not starting you need to bypass everything and test the compressor directly to see if it will run. best done buy a qualified Appliance tech unless your from and electrical background? also when the motor/compressor is tested they can see if the freezer starts to freeze down. Because of the cost of changing the Compressor and the fact that a lot of the gas leaks in these units can not be repaired due to the leak being inside the freezer walls a new Freezer is still the best option. Also when a Fridge or freezer is left to sit for 5 years the Compressor is likely to have seized and rust may ave formed inside units copper pipes. Cheers
I'd recommend a new Fisher and Paykel Chest freezer with a extended warranty. cheers

Average freezers last for several years, usually 10 or more. The compressor should not run all of the time, maybe less than 10 to 20 percent of the time if it is working properly. Not sure what you mean by the bipass, some freezer have a manual defrost, and in this mode it will not cool. Insure the location where you have the freezer allows for ample air circulation, sometimes folks put them in little spaces that prevent air circulation to the condensing/compressor unit and they overheat and do not work well and fail very quickly.

Chest Freezer not cooling

Please don't rate this solution, as anything but FixYa brings my rating down, but here's what you've got:
You have a refrigerant leak (commonly referred to a Freon, but these days usually R134A refrigerant). Some refrigerant has leaked, so you are still getting some cooling, but there is not enough refrigerant left to cool throughout the entire evaporator coils. This is NOT a repairable condition, as the coils are foamed in place and not accessable for leak repair. If this unit is under 5 years old (typical sealed system warranty) the manufacturer will most likely replace your freezer with a new one. If over 5 years, you are out of luck. Buy a replacement freezer.
