Question about HP LaserJet 5L Printer

HP 5l laserjet printing problem

Good Day
Thank-you for your assistance
My problem is that teh HP 5L laserjet printer I have prints the first half of the document blurred text and then the 2nd half is good quality. Please could you help with suggestions as to where the problem could be.

    Hi Ralph,

    This is just to explain your problem and why you would want to have it serviced at a repair center or buy new.

    A laser printer works with toner. A document's text is sent to the printer from the PC in radio packets (sounds like a fax machine) over the printer cable. It is decoded into ASCII symbols and a static charger impresses the paper with a static charge, each representing a letter of the textual content. Toner is the then passed close to the paper where the charged paper picks up the toner on the character impressions. Lastly the paper passes under a tungsten wire that super heats the toner so it melts into the paper. The printed document is a result of this sequence.

    Now for the hard part. Since half of your document is clear and the other half blurred, the paper that gets charged before passing by the toner is passing too far from the charging element at exactly half way through the print job. This has to be a mechanical malfunction in the paper path and there is nothing you can do about it without special training. From my training, this is only the beginning of your troubles. Besides the obvious problem you probably have a series of worn parts from bushings to the tungsten wire itself, which can sag from use. I'd say you'd be looking at three to four billable hours plus parts.

    Now you understand what is wrong and why, for the most part. So, pay for service or better yet get a whole new printer... my best suggestion. The current generation of laser printers can print in color and cost less than you paid for your current printer. Look carefully at the Minolta brand.

This error is not caused by the cartridge, it is either a cable issue or a driver issue. Try reseating the parallel cable on the back of the printer and make sure the cable is securely attached to the parallel port on the computer as well. Also make sure that you are printing with the correct driver.

try the laserjet 5L...will usualy work with most and should be in your windows, you cant do any harm trying a few other than wasting paper with blurb... switch your printer off if it satrts streamin out page after page.
Im sure 5L will work though.#

Hi, if I am printing a form, my 5L printer cannot print the full pages, it runs into two or more pages.What needs adjustment? thank you


The issue could either be in your general printer setup (adjust the scaling % in the printer options) or in the application you are printing (adjust the page setup scaling % or it may possibly have the option to print 1 page high x 1 page wide).

HP LaserJet 5L wont do anything


First of all, I wouldn't spend 10 cents on this printer at this point, but is there a toner cartridge installed? It could be empty, and it's probably not going to print very well after all this time anyway. Try giving it a few shakes side to side to loosen any toner that may be inside, if that doesn't get it going, then pick up a new laser printer for $70-$100 (basically the price of a replacement toner cartridge)

HP laserjet 5L prints only 2/3 to 3/4 of the page of a 1 page doc


which bit is usually missing?

If it only prints the 1st 3/4 ish of the page then it could either be the page slipping a bit due to poor pick up rollers or much more likely it could be that you are sending a large file to the printer and the printer does not have enough memory.

Try printing in draft or scale down the res/size of the file you are printing

Parts are no longer available. You might be able to clean the feed roller by removing the toner cartridge and cleaning the gray roller with isoprpyl alcohone.

HP Laserjet 5L feeds multiple pages through at a time


It prob. needs an overhaul/reconditioning/cleaning to soften up or replace the rollers and rubber pads in the paper path. I imagine it needs this about every 5-6 years. Don't know if new parts are still available for this great old machine, but it's worth trying to keep it alive, at least until you change computers and don't have a parallel output port anymore ;^).
