Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

The problem is simple: the fabric conditioner I put in the drawer compartment isn't draining into the main drum ... is still in the drawer when I empty the machine of my washed clothes. I've cleaned lots of gunk out of the drawer (and recess), run an empty machine on 90 degree washes several times, used Calgon tabs, but nothing seems to work. (I use washing tablets in the main drawer compartment, and these dissolve and drain into the drum without any problem.) Is there some kind of valve for the fabric conditioner compartment that I need to locate and clean?

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,
Sorry to ask and please don't take this the wrong way but did you manage to remove the whole dispenser drawer and clear out the siphoning tube in the conditioner tray when you cleaned the 'gunk' out? If not please try the following guidance notes, paying particular attention to the bit in bold near the end ;-0)
Remove the complete drawer. To do this you will have to do one of the following-

  • Top catch- push down the lip/catch at the middle rear and pull the drawer out (that's how our Bosch one is removed)
  • release the catches underneath (our daughter's Indesit) or
  • lift upwards on the tray as it is coming out to clear the lip underneath.
One of these should enable you remove it
(I am having to guess some of the following!)
Once out identify which tray is for the conditioner- the others are simply 'chutes' and open-ended.
It will normally have some sort of cover over it which you must remove to expose the little stuck up pipe/tube. On some models there is just a small individual cap over the tube. The tube is down which the conditioner and water should siphon. It is likely to be blocked by 'gunge'- a mix of powder and conditioner. The whole of the tray, particularly this pipe and the bit which fits over it, must be completely clean and clear for it to operate correctly. It is worthwhile checking fairly regularly.
If this does not work, pull out the dispenser drawer far enough to be able to just see the softener tray, select the (final?) rinse and check that water is entering the tray. If it isn't there is a fault with the water distribution and an engineer call is required ;-0(
Good luck,
John C

Fabric softener drawer filling with water

lift out the blue part of the conditioner compartment and you'll see attached a tube at the end.
clean this out completely.
also check the tube in the compartment is clear.
poke a cotton bud down it to clear it.
if you want to check to see if its worked take the drawer out(blue button at back of drawer) put the blue grid back in the dispenser and fill the compartment up under the tap ,hold the drawer level.
as it gets full you should see water start to flow out the back ,turn the tap off and if its worked the compartment will slowly empty.
these were a big problem for hotpoint and concentrated conditioners will block it regularly.

Water begins to drain into the detergent drawer but does not drain into drum fast enough so the drawer area begins to fill and then begins to spill out of the drawer area all over the floor. If I press...

remove the drain pump and check out.
This is inevitably caused by a blockage. The small fabric conditioner compartment in the soap dispenser drawer has a removable plastic cap. This cap fits on the top of a tube which has a hole running through it where the water should siphon through.

When the time comes for the fabric conditioner to be released, cold water enters the small compartment and just washes the conditioner over the top and down the dispenser to the tub. When the water stops flowing, all that is left is the clear water. This water should siphon up the inside of the cap and down the tube.

This tube often gets blocked with the conditioner and if you remove the dispenser drawer and take off the cap you can give the whole thing a good clean out. If the cap is missing, the siphoning will not occur.

To test the function, hold the soap drawer under the tap and allow the water to fill the fabric compartment to overflowing. When you turn off the tap, the remaining water should slowly siphon out of the hole under the cap.

its the problem in the pump and something is getting blocked in the pump so water is not getting out.

    Front-Loading Whirlpool Washers
  1. Unplug the washer. Remove the three screws along the bottom of the toe panel and pull the panel forward to remove it.
  2. Put your bucket or towels under the drain pump. Open the pump slowly so the water doesn't all spill out at once. If you have a wet/dry vacuum, you can connect it to the drain hose to remove the water from the washer before opening the pump.
  3. Open the door covering the pump wiring and disconnect the wiring.
  4. Remove the two drain lines from the pump.
  5. Remove the screw that attaches the pump to the washer frame and pull out the pump.
  6. if the pump is leaky or cracked it needs replacement.
  7. for prats you can get it from

When wash is done, the fabric softner tray is left with water. Why?

Take out the drawer and clean the compartment and pipe at the end of the drawer with hot soapy water - washing up liquid works well. Clean all around it. Use a pipe cleaner, cotton buds or piece of coiled curtain wire to ensure that the U shaped pipe is clear of obstruction. Pull it back and forward to dislodge any accumulated fabric conditioner. To show this is working OK, put it in the sink and fill up the compartment with water until it is overflowing then stop. The water should drain out of the compartment on its own.

Next, where the drawer fits in the machine clean the water exit above the drawer with a washing up brush. This can appear brown or white depending on your water type. If this is OK then try running the machine. If there is still a problem, remove the drawer again and turn off the power at the mains. Use something like a paper clip to poke all the holes in the water dispenser area above the drawer. There are lots of them so some patience might be required. If you live in a hard water area it could be blocked with limescale in which case an application of a descaling mousse or spray will assist. Once complete, make sure you rinse the drawer area, drawer and put the drawer back in and run the machine on a short cold fill wash cycle. Put some fab con in the drawer to test that the machine drains it correctly. A good idea is to slightly water down fab con concentrate as it will eventually clog up the dispenser. If all is well then there will be no fab con left. If it is still there then you will need to get into the water dispensing area to see what is wrong. Occasionally the mechanism can get jammed, lose a spring or just get broken, in which case it will need replacing.

The conditioner part is always full of water and does not take down any fabric condtioner that is put in. Have cleaned drawer an inside but does not work.
