Question about Nikon COOLPIX S5100 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Nikon Coolpix S5100 Lens Error. Lens opens then retracts. I tried taking ourt and replacing the battery and card. Tried compressed air. Tried vacuum cleaner. Tried inserting paper in the barrell ring. The opening and closes appears very smooth so it is probably not grit there. Could be grit where the off-on button is or shooting button? Any advice? Thanks.

I sent it to Nikon to be fixed - it came back after about a week or less fixed and working nicely -they did not explain what was the cause but it was free (I bought it two months ago) . Most probably it was dust when I put it in my pocket. Now I hang it from a strap around my neck.

thx for the follow-up...mine is only 2.5 mo old and so I may have to send it in too...thanks.

I also have an older Coolpix from 2006 when the lens opens it rotates and that probably helps dislodge any dust, not so in the newer model

The lens on my camera is stuck. Whenever I turn it on, the screen just says lens error. How can I fix this?

Hello and Welcome to FixYa!
The following solutions are there by which you may fix the lens error
  • Firstly you can try removing the batteries and replacing it with a new set of fully charge ones
  • If the batteries ran down while you were taking photos with the lens extended, you might also get this error. Remove the the memory card and replace the batteries with a fresh recharged set. Try to power on the unit with the fresh set of batteries while the memory card is removed
  • Connect your camera to your computer using your USB DATA cable which came with the camera. Once the camera gets power in this mode, the screen should stay off, hence, supplying the lens with more power to push or pull out/in
  • Place the camera on a sturdy table with the lens pointing to the ceiling. With a fresh set of batteries installed(Do this without a memory card) hold down the shutter button while you power on the unit
  • Now, you can either use a compressed air canister to blow around the lens area. This will result in the sand or dust particles to be blown out of the area between the lens and the barrel. Or, you can use a vacuum and and carefully place the nozzle around the lens to out the particles
If you have tried all of the above and still you have lens error then it is probably that your Nikon Coolpix S3000 Digital Camera is in need of servicing by a service professional.

Any more confusion, queries or for further assistance, I am here to help.
I hope this solution helps you

New S5100 Nikon coolpix 12 mpx lens error . It opens then closes immediately and says lens error on screen . what to do??

Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to lens error problems can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some last resort troubleshooting steps that you can try that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try.

S210 Lens Error

Try jiggling the lens. Use compressed air to blow out any grit around the lens barrel. If that doesn't do it, you'll need to get the camera serviced or replaced.

My Nikon L16 camera lens will not retract. The message code says " Lens Error". The lens makes a buzzing sound when the camera is turned on and off. I already tried taking the batteries out...

Hi I found this info on the Nikon Australia website:

"System Error" or "Lens Error" message in LCD monitor trnsp.gif Question My COOLPIX camera displays a "System Error" or "Lens Error" message. What should I do? trnsp.gif Answer Having a "System Error" or "Lens Error" message displayed on the camera's LCD monitor would generally indicate that your camera needs servicing. A System Error is a general error which can be caused by many things: lens problem, CF Card problem, general camera failure, etc. To troubleshoot, please try the following:
  1. Use the memory card that originally came with your camera (or a Nikon approved card).
  2. Remove and replace the battery.
On the other hand, a Lens Error generally means that an error has occured during the lens operation. To troubleshoot, please try the following:
  1. Turn off the camera.
  2. Remove and replace the battery.
  3. Turn on the camera.
If the above tips do not help, your camera must be sent to our Nikon Authorised Service Centres, there are no user serviceable parts in our Nikon COOLPIX cameras. We apologize for any inconvenience caused and we will do everything to repair your Nikon camera as quickly as possible. Click Here for our Nikon Authorised Service Centres details.

Seems you may just have to remove and replace the battery - sort of like a Windows Restart to fix a computer problem! - this would reset your camera's memory.

Hope this helps.
