I should also have added that no, you can't take pics using the monitor instead of the viewfinder. Nikon introduced the LiveView feature with the D3 and the D300, introduced a year after the D40x.

Nikon D5100 vs Nikon D3200

They both take superb pictures. The D3200 is slightly easier to learn how to use, while the D5100 is easier to use once you learn it. That is, the D3200's menus will guide you through all its settings, while with the D5100 you can change those settings with less work once you learn the proper buttons to push. The D3200 has a higher resolution, but even the D5100 will take photos that can be enlarged to 8x10 and larger.

I suggest you go to a good camera store and try them both out. See which one better fits your hands. You don't want to buy a camera based on specs, or other people's opinions. You want a camera that best works for YOU. Having said that, the D3200 is probably a better first SLR. However, try them both out and choose the one that's better for YOU.

I just bought a d60 and the monitor does not display anything other than a blank screen or the shooting info--never the monitor view. what switch am have I clcked or missed?

I assume it will also display the menu when you press the menu button?

The D60 does not have a Live View capability. You have to use the viewfinder just as SLR uses have been doing for half a century.

Camra crashed

If the camera is going into rewind mode as soon as it is switched on you should check the manual rewind button and make sure it is not stuck in the on position. It is only a small rubber button that you would use a fine pen tip to push in, sometimes they can get stuck inside the cover and end up being on all the time. This model I think has the button on the bottom of the camera.

Manual Exposure mode Nikon F80

1) turn the mode switch/knob on the left of the camera to M ( manual mode ) 2) turn your lens to the highest f-stop ( 22 or 16 depending on your lens ) 3) in front of shutter release button you have control for your aperture : turn until the desired aperture is displayed ( view finder or the LCD monitor on the top ) 4) your shutter speed setting is controlled with your thumb with the control situated next to the strap lug on the right hand side of the camera. 5) press shutter release half way and look through viewfinder and see light meter reading and adjust either shutter speeds or the aperture as explained being guided by the l.meter.
