Hi there ace,

There are several possible causes

  • Vacuum leak. Check hoses and connections for a hissing sound.
  • The EGR valve may be leaking
  • The PCV valve may be plugged
  • Air filter may be clogged
  • Fuel pump not delivering sufficient quantity
  • Timing chain stretched/Worn timing gears
All are easily checked. You'll need a timing light for the timing chain check. A can of Carb Cleaner for the valves.

Get back to me with what you find out. We can take it from there. Good luck Ace

Mike

Starting ruff

I'm leaning toward a bad sensor, as in throttle body temperature, or coolant temperature sensor. The smell of too much fuel is probably from pushing pedal to start, which shouldn't be necessary on a fuel injected vehicle. What does it do if you leave your foot off the gas pedal during start? As far as fuel filter goes, if it hasn't been done in a while, I'd do it anyway just as preventative maintemance if nothing else.
