Is your laptop booting on switching it on, ie, it is showing hard disk activity and shows initial boot screen. If yes, while switching on press F8 button very frequently. You will get a screen showing the options for booting. Choose a safe mode option and restore your computer to an earlier date. This may solve your problem. On the other hand just switching on the computer shows monitor with yellow and black stripes, you may have to take it to a service center.

When i try to turn my laptop on, i see a screen with white lines and it won't work. What should i do?

If you have an external monitor or LCD monitor, try connecting it to the laptop and then turn the laptop on - if external video shows up normally then most likely you have a bad screen; if both internal and external video shows pretty much the same white lines / white outs then the system (systemboard) is most likely bad.

Vertial yellow line appeared on screen of my inspiron 1420

Try connecting an external monitor to the 15 pin VGA plug located on the right side. You may have to initiate the external monitor by holding down the Function left of the Space bar and depressing the associated key, (it should have a little picture of a monitor).
If the display is fine on the external monitor then you have a bad LCD display. If you still get the yellow line on the external monitor your motherboard (system board) needs to be replaced.

Such occurrence can be due a to defective LCD (inverter, flex cable or the LCD itself). On the other hand it can be cause by a faulty video graphic card. Try connecting an external monitor and let me know of the outcome. Thank you and regards.

Broken screen, external monitor via VGA won't

Press "Fn+F7" once, wait a few seconds, and press it again, to "cycle" through all the possibilities (LCD-only, VGA-only, both).

Try the monitor with some other computer (desktop or laptop) to see if the monitor works at all.

Restart your computer -- does the initial "splash" screen (showing CPU speed and RAM-test) show? Does the "Windows" screen (with the crawling worm) show on the external monitor?

Connection to external monitor stopped working

Did you go to the display properties screen and check the settings of the second monitor connection. You must turn it on, and have it set to a low enough resolution for the monitor to work. If it shows the second monitor, Click Identify and it will put a number on the laptop screen. Which ever number doesn't show up is the external monitor. Select it and set the resolution down by grabbing the scroll bar and drag it to the left. Start at 800x600 or so and apply changes. If the monitor doesn't come on, check to see if the monitor is on.

Laptop problem

Reseat the video cable connection under the keyboard, and see if the lines go away. If not, connect an external monitor, see if the lines show there. If the lines do not appear on the external monitor, then replace the LCD. If they do appear on the external monitor, replace the motherboard
