Look in the set menu under closed captions, there will likely be a setting there for "TEXT" IF FOUND SWITCH IT TO OFF.

This is a feature a lot of sets had for books etc viewed but was never really used---the result a black box on the screen.

My Dell laptop screen has a white bar that covers 3/4 of my entire screen...i can see a hint of what is behind the white bar, how do i get rid of this bar so I can see the entire screen?

Hi Molly,
This could be a problem with either your drivers, your screen, or your graphics card (or motherboard if it is a cheaper laptop)
To troubleshoot -
If it's a problem with your drivers, firstly restart the laptop and note when the white bar appears. If it appears immediately, then it's not your drivers. If it takes a while to appear (ie, when you're on the windows desktop) then you'll need to update your drivers. Dell support should help you out with this.
If it does appear immediately, then we need to narrow down whether it is your graphics card or your screen. Try plugging it in to an external computer monitor - If the problem is duplicated on the external screen, then it is your graphics card or motherboard. You'll need to replace this. If your computer is under warranty - you should be okay - if it's not, depending on how old the laptop is it's probably a better idea to replace the computer rather than send it off to Dell to be replaced
If it's not duplicated on the external screen, then it may be damage to the laptop screen itself. You'll need to replace the screen. Same conditions as the above paragraph.

I have a emachine and I have tried to get rid of the bar but it continues to reappear.

Is it a black or multicolered bar that runs across the screen? You cant fix that. The monitor is defective and needs to be returned or trashed. You will need a new one.

Tool bar for computer gone how do i find tool bars in my computer

"FILE, EDIT or VIEW" options on the top.

  1. Open Internet Explorer, and make sure that it is running properly. If you receive any error messages upon opening it, your best bet is to reinstall Explorer rather than customize the options as new add-ons have likely caused serious problems. If it runs properly, however, continue to the next step.
  2. Check to see that the menu bar is visible. If the menu bar is missing, you will have to make it reappear. Right-click anywhere below the "Title Bar" (the bar which shows the Internet Explorer icon and the name of the current website) and any other visible menu bars. Then be sure that the "Menu Bar" has a check mark beside it on the window that appears. Click "Menu Bar" if there is no check.
  3. Click on "View" in the menu bar. Then click on "Toolbars" from that menu. This will bring up a list of available tool bars. To make the one you want appear, simply click its name, making sure that a check appears next to the name.
  4. Restart Internet Explorer. Some toolbars will reappear immediately. Others require a restart. But restart the application anyway to make sure that your new preferences are saved.
  5. Reinstall any extra toolbar applications if they do not appear in the Toolbar menu.
Please try this and see if anything help's.

Computer has viruses which might be why it has a the blue screen

Try entering safe mode and doing the virus scan:
  • Switch on your PC
  • Before the Windows Logo screen appears press F8 to get the startup options menu
  • Chose Safe Mode
  • Once your computer boots, run AVG and let it remove all the viruses. Reboot and it should go into Windows as normal. You might have to rerun the scan a few times to get rid of everything but it should do the job.
