Adjust the screen contrast. Turn the calculator on. Press and release the 2nd key, then press and hold the up-arrow key until the numbers darken. If you go too far, repeat the process with the 2nd and down-arrow keys.

I can barely see the numbers on the screen--changed batteries but it doesn't make any difference

LCD screen is separating. It happens over time to all LCDs. It is shot. Should be able to lightly press on it while you are calculating and see the numbers fine.

Screen began flashing then went dark

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LEDflashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faultyinverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow myinstructions to identify the fault and possible fix :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3598095-faulty_laptop_lcd_screen

The words and numbers that show up on the screen are really hard to make out. They are really light and barely noticable.

Adjust the screen contrast. Turn the calculator on. Press and release the 2ND key, then press and hold the up-arrow key for a couple of seconds to darken the screen. If you go too far, repeat the process using the 2ND and down-arrow keys.

Blank vertical lines are appearing on the screen.

Hi, and sorry for my english !
Maybe the LCD driver voltage is wrong or noisy. I had the same problem: some vertical lines (not constant), pulsing contrast after powerup, pixel crosstalk, sometimes no screen

Solution: Try to replace the LCD power negative voltage buffer capacitor.
In my hardware version it is in the middle of the two T6B07 column driver IC (U3&U4) on the right side. Colored black, electrolytic type and the Value is : 10uF/25V. Chage it to around the same type.
There is enought space, so you can use a small sized non smd type capacitor. Be care of the polarity.

I hope it will help... ;)

Display is so light that I can barely read it, I've replaced the batteries and no change

Have you attempted darkening the display on the calculator through the function keys? Push "2nd" and then push "up" a few times. After resetting the calculator, this setting will always revert to a lower, unreadable setting. I'm sure TI knows about this, but they probably arent too inclined to fix it.
