Question about Sony VAIO VGN-FJ170/B Notebook

1 Answer

Black screen Hello, I have a vaio notebook that is about 3 yrs. old and out of warranty, The problem is when i open it up and power it on, all I get is a black screen and I can see the faint outline of the Vaio logo as the computer powers up. It functions normally accept for I cant see the screen. As I close the notebook while its still on, the screen comes to life when its almost closed, so i really cant use it as it is. But it runs fine otherwise. Any Ideas as to how i can fix this screen problem. Is there a switch inside the hinge that keeps the screen from coming on? Thanks.

Hello doughman93,

It is one of two things:

1) check the video cable harness (cable connect to the system board at one end and screen at the other end).

2) video inverter - provides back lighting. Can be going bad or is bad (needs replacing).

Hope this helps and good luck.

Sounds like a software error. When the screen has been blaxk for a minute or two try hitting control+alt+del and use the task manager to start the process explorer.exe if so then there is a registry or windows error and needs to be repaired.

would you have been happier if you had a 3-year warranty on your machine? I suggest you try to compare between buying a new motherboard to buying a whole new notebook...the latter usually is more reasonable. Again, get an extended warranty

3 month old Sony Vaio notebook keeps turning off by itself, won't even last more then a couple seconds to a couple minutes, tried system restore and defragmenting, and disk cleaning...still nothing!! could...

Try on the BIOS/System Setup and check if its turning off there as well. To entere there, start your computer up, and when you see the Vaio logo press [Delete] several times. You will see a blue screen or black with information of your computer, leave it there for as long as it takes to shut down, if it doesn't then please let us know.

Hp 6000 notebook screen goes black..... blue control lights go on and off

if i'm reading this correctly, it sounds like it could be a motherboard/video issue. If that's the case then unfortunately you are probably going to need a new computer if it's out of warranty...

for now however, try shutting down the computer and removing all power (power cord, battery) for a few minutes, then plug it back in and try to boot.
