Question about Kidde Nighthawk Combo Gas/co Detector
Haha, same thing just happened to me and really scared me. Thats not a '97' that is an upside down 'Lb' for low battery. According to the manual: "A 9V battery is needed. If battery is low or missing while the unit is plugged into a 120V outlet, an "Lb" message will display which will blink alternately with a the CO reading every second and the sounder will chirp every 15 seconds."

You are going to hate this as much as I did!
In the manual you will read this ..
Manual for Kidde Nighthawk C02 Detector
On page 13
In the rare event that your alarm malfunctions,
it will alert you with a short “chirp” and the red
LED will flash once every 30 seconds. The
digital model will display “Err” as shown in
Seven years after initial power up, this unit will "chirp" every
30 seconds to indicate that it is time to replace the alarm.
The unit will not detect CO in this condition. Please replace

Some models of Carbon Monoxide Detectors will give an audible beep every 25-30 seconds after it has sounded an alert alarm. This may have happened when there was noone home to hear it. A periodic beeping sound may also indicate it is time to change the battery.
Solution: Install a new battery and check your manual for instructions on how to reset the system. Check the expiry date on your unit, it needs to be replaced after 5 to 7 years, according to the manufacturer specifications.
If you are in doubt that your Carbon Monoxide Detector is not working effectively, REPLACE IT. Your safety and your peace of mind is worth it.

If the display shows "Err", push and hold the Peak Level button. Does the display change to "E09"? If so, then you have just been "had" by the grossly under-documented "planned obsolescence feature" called, rather matter-of-factly, "End of Life". This means that ~7 years after first being powered up, the unit will, BY DESIGN, cease to function, forcing you to buy a replacement. Would have been nice of Kidde to include THAT warning on the OUTSIDE of the package. Call their "Hotline" at 1-800-880-6788 and tell them what you think of that policy. If it is still under warranty (5 or 7 years depending on date of manufacture) they should replace it. In any event, buy another one; if they replace your first one you will have twice the protection. Not a bad thing. _ Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, despite the handle.Words to live by: "Every creative act results from a sudden cessation of stupidity." -Edwin H. Sounds like you may be due a warranty replacement. Call the Kidde "Hotline" at 1-800-880-6788 with your Model number, serial number, and manufacturing date. The original sales receipt would be helpful but probably not absolutely necessary. Good luck. *Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, despite the handle.
