Question about Kidde Nighthawk Combo Gas/co Detector

1 Answer

We have a Kidde Nighthawk Carbon Monoxide detector. Last week our breaker tripped and ever since then our detector has been beeping once every 15-20 seconds. The detector has a code 97 displayed. We can not find any information on this.

Haha, same thing just happened to me and really scared me. Thats not a '97' that is an upside down 'Lb' for low battery. According to the manual: "A 9V battery is needed. If battery is low or missing while the unit is plugged into a 120V outlet, an "Lb" message will display which will blink alternately with a the CO reading every second and the sounder will chirp every 15 seconds."

You are going to hate this as much as I did!
In the manual you will read this ..

Manual for Kidde Nighthawk C02 Detector
On page 13
----------------------------------
Unit Malfunction
In the rare event that your alarm malfunctions,
it will alert you with a short “chirp” and the red
LED will flash once every 30 seconds. The
digital model will display “Err” as shown in
Fig. 6.
Seven years after initial power up, this unit will "chirp" every
30 seconds to indicate that it is time to replace the alarm.
The unit will not detect CO in this condition. Please replace
immediately.

SOURCE: My nighthawk Kidde carbon monoxide detector keeps

Some models of Carbon Monoxide Detectors will give an audible beep every 25-30 seconds after it has sounded an alert alarm. This may have happened when there was noone home to hear it. A periodic beeping sound may also indicate it is time to change the battery.

Solution: Install a new battery and check your manual for instructions on how to reset the system. Check the expiry date on your unit, it needs to be replaced after 5 to 7 years, according to the manufacturer specifications.

If you are in doubt that your Carbon Monoxide Detector is not working effectively, REPLACE IT. Your safety and your peace of mind is worth it.

SOURCE: By LAFYRAD7170 on Aug 13,

If the display shows "Err", push and hold the Peak Level button. Does the display change to "E09"? If so, then you have just been "had" by the grossly under-documented "planned obsolescence feature" called, rather matter-of-factly, "End of Life". This means that ~7 years after first being powered up, the unit will, BY DESIGN, cease to function, forcing you to buy a replacement. Would have been nice of Kidde to include THAT warning on the OUTSIDE of the package. Call their "Hotline" at 1-800-880-6788 and tell them what you think of that policy. If it is still under warranty (5 or 7 years depending on date of manufacture) they should replace it. In any event, buy another one; if they replace your first one you will have twice the protection. SOURCE: My Kidde "Nighthawk" carbon monoxide

Sounds like you may be due a warranty replacement. Call the Kidde "Hotline" at 1-800-880-6788 with your Model number, serial number, and manufacturing date. The original sales receipt would be helpful but probably not absolutely necessary. Good luck. *Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, despite the handle. A reading of 221 ppm carbon monoxide gas is a dangerous level that should be taken seriously. You could try a new battery and reset the detector. If in doubt, always err on the cautious side and have the apartment checked by a professional or by the local fire department.

A new carbon monoxide detector is a small investment that may prevent carbon monoxide poisoning or death.

My carbon monoxide detector just has one sold beep and is not plugged in.

I assume you mean your carbon monoxide detector has one solid beep, and it is probably an AC unit. It may be safe to assume that it has battery backup if it is beeping without being plugged in.

First, you may replace the battery with a new one, plug it in and hit the reset button. If that doesn't work, you could bring it in to your local fire department to have it tested.

Check the expiry date on the Carbon Monoxide Detector. It should be replaced if it is more than 5 to 7 years old, check manufacturer recommendations.

A replacement carbon monoxide detector will give you the protection you need and peace of mind. Your safety depends on how fast you deal with this issue.

How to fix detector

You don't mention how old the detector is. If it is more than 5 years old the detector may be beeping to indicate the end of its service life. A smoke detector can last much longer but carbon monoxide detectors have a limited life span. If putting in new batteries doesn't fix the problem then most likely you will need to replace it.

Carbon monoxide is on

When a Carbon Monoxide Detector alarm goes off, you should follow the procedures that came with the manufacturer manual. Even when the alarm sounds, you cannot smell, taste, or see this dangerous silent killer known as Carbon Monoxide.

Have your house checked by your local fire department for possible levels of CO gas readings. If this all checks out, you can go online to Kidde Nighthawk website and find the manual for your Carbon Monoxide detector model.

Hopefully, you found your solution since you posted this question back in Dec, 2008. Go to my website to read industry information and to view most Brands and Models of Carbon Monoxide Detectors.
