I have many years experience repairing Canon scanners so here is my suggestion for you.
You dont mention what type of scanner you have. What I would do if I were you would be to find the make and model of the scanner you have (there should be a tag on the scanner somewhere, on the back, top or underneath it). I would then google the make and model and add the word drivers to your search. Go to the manufacturers website of the scanner and download the latest drivers from them. Once you have the drivers disconnect the cable from the scanner to the computer first, then install the new drivers you have. Then with the power on to your scanner connect the cable from the scanner to your computer again. A pop up window should come up saying a new device or drivers are being installed. Once that completes I would then reboot (restart) your computer and you should be able to scan now.
I hope this helps you out.
