Question about Televison & Video

2 Answers

Hi, I have a samsung HL-R508W DLP TV that of late has the following problem. When I turn it on, it tries to start up. I can hear the channel but no video. It shuts itself off and tries to start again about 3 times and then displays the lamp replacement symbol. I have replaced the lamp but the problem persists. The problem was gradual in the sense that it used to turn on after a few tries and now it never succeeds to fully turn on. Is this a problem with the ballast or color wheel or is there no hope???

can you give me some instructions on how to get to the ballast board and the supply voltage??

  • kgovin Mar 22, 2011

is it the board to the right of the lamp housing?

  • kgovin Mar 22, 2011

located and removed the ballast card. Everything seems fine on inspection. Where is the power suply section on the HL-R5087W unit. Is it part of the lighting engine unit. Your replies are lacking any detailed information.

I replaced with a new ballast. Te\he problem did not go away. Its the same situation. Someone else suggested that I reset the lamp counter. How do I do that for this unit?
    Thanks

I replaced the ballast and the problem remains. I saw online that to reset the lamp counter you had to get into the service menu by pressing Mute + 1 + 8 + 2 + Power buttons in sequence. I tried this and there was no effect. The TV did not go into the service menu. I have also replaced the bulb. What else could be wrong?
    Thanks

1. you possibly replaced the lamp but didn't reset the counter for the lamp.
2. there is in some models a counter to that counts the hours of use to the lamp then a controller relay that to a program that counts the hours of use for the lamp
3. your lamp will need a service tech to reset this or contact the manufacturers tech depart to get the instruction set to reset the lamp counter.

Hi kgovin,

You have to check the ballast board for faulty parts, bad solder joints. Also check the supply voltage for bad filter capacitor and bad solder joints in the power supply section. Bad solder joints/dry joints is hard to spot I would advice you to work in the brightest area or used table lamp/portable lamps to locate it in the board.

open the back panel of your unit, you will see the entire board. If you're not familiar where the ballast board you have to trace the cable from the lamp going to that board. Once located the board trace the line also going to the power supply where the power cord is connected.

Select TV input, Press Menu, Select Channel, in menu Antenna=Cable (for you), (then perhaps, Auto Program with Cable or Air+Cable), tweak Channel List, turn on LNA if needed, shouldn't be.
Somewhere there may be different modulations, some offset the channel a fraction and are important for channels above 13. I'm basing this on my non-cable Samsung HL-T5687.
BTW, I had an HLS until it gave trouble, paid for an upgrade to LED from bulb when I got HLT. Very pleased, until it fails. -Ken

It is the color wheel, inside the light engine. The bearings get dirty and makes it harder for the wheel to spin causing that whin.
