Question about Maytag MMV6178 Convection Microwave Oven

1 Answer

The bulbs (there are two) inside the oven appear impossible to get at, and they are dirty, almost impossible to clean because of a metal guard below them. So, I have two problems: 1. They appear burned out. 2. They are dirty and almost impossible to clean. If I could remove the stupid metal guard, I could at least get in there and clean them. I might even have a shot at replacing the tubes. Unless these tubes are part of the convection part of the oven? Still I need to be able to clean them. Any help out there?

How to change a light bulb on an oster microwave

As far as I know, the following procedure applies to all countertop microwave ovens. Unplug the oven. Remove the screws holding the top/side cover (there are some on a flange around the back, and usually others either on the sides or on a flange wrapped around the bottom on each side).

Pull the cover back about 1/8" to unhook the front, then lift it off. You should see the lamp socket or a sheet metal box covering the lamp socket on top of the oven cavity (a few models have the lamp on one side or the back, but these are rare). If the lamp is enclosed in a box, remove the screws holding the box and lift or slide it off. (If you are unsure whether you are looking at the right object, open the door and look inside the cavity to make sure it matches the place where the light comes in.)

While you have the cover off, check the fan on the right side to make sure it is reasonably clean and the bearings are running smoothly. If the cooling fins on the magnetron are dirty, wipe those off also. Do not touch the circuitry on the controller board with your fingers or a with metal tool held in your fingers. Static electricity from your body could damage the electronics, even if you can't feel a spark.

I'm experiencing occasional arching from the center of the oven i.e. out of the spindle that rotates the metal rack and glass turntable. I cleaned thoroughly and it seems to have minimized the proble

Its unlikely to be associated with the tuntable motor. Units are tuned to prevent arching. Therefore it appears something may have changed inside the unit. Be sure there are no loose items or bits of foil or other mateallic items inside. Also check metal turntable.

What is the cardboard (silver) for inside the microwave, our got dirty and my husband threw away, Is microwave still good?

The ALLUMINIUM FIBER PANEL is to prevent microwaves to erradiate whatever is on the other side, so YES it is essential, and YES the oven will worke (BUT FOR HOW LONG ???) that is the question... you should replace the panel (unless the oven is old and you were planning to replace it) in that case, use it until it dies...

When food soils the inside of any oven it must be cleaned immediately, if the food is left without cleaning it will degrade the inside coating (special paint) and expose the metal thus reflecting microwaves in the magnetron and damage to the magnetron will occure...

Put a hamburger in to heat, on a paper plate. The interior began to spark. the plate on the Right hand side appears to have a something black and charred (as if a piece of meat or grease has adhered to it)...

Usually the sparks are from exposed metal. Clean the oven, and the table and anything else you can inside. Then just try nuking a cup of water. That gives it something to work with and it won;t make any sparks itself. Then just see if the sparks are gone. If the paint has come off inside the cavity and exposed some metal you can get sparks but that usually means replacing the microwave. If its caused by an object or buildup then a good cleaning stops it.

How do I clean the inside glass on the door - GE Profile JVM1870

I have a Kenmore with similar issues.
Model 665.61639100
Anyway, good luck with this. Hope someone has an answer for you (and me).
Mine has a open slot on the top front of the door. Kinda like a double plate window execpt for the opening in front. Why is this there? I don't know. Weird design. But it leaves for the possibilty of liquid to splash in there leaving it hard to clean (like impossible).

I'm thinking I have to completely remove and disect the door.

Arching when in use Intense arcing when the microwave is on. Wave-guard has been burnt. Arcing has caused some holes have appeared in the microwave 'gun'

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck to the inside of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

In some models it is a larger stirrer cover type made of thicker plastic in the ceiling of the oven.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced. It provides important protection for the magnetron.

If the magnetron is damaged, it will have to be replaced, too.

Is the Advantium Mod: SCA1000HCC03 the same as the SCA1001SS?

They are indeed the same bulb, a 10W halogen. Care must be taken not to touch the lamp, as the oils from the skin will shorten its life. In many recent models, the oven must be removed from the wall (a two-person job due to safety concerns) and the cover must be removed. The manufacturers consider this a "technician-only" type job to lessen their liability. You can find helpful exploded view diagrams of both ovens and order the bulbs here:
