Question about Western Digital My Book Premium ES Edition WDG1SU5000 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

Just bought a macbook. it wouldn't read my external drive at all. took it to work, plugged it in (not doing anything different from the time before), and it worked fine. great. got home, attempted it again, and it's not reading the drive at all. would really hate losing my 200gb+ of music. help in this matter would greatly be appreciated. i tested the usb inputs on my macbook, and they work fine, so i'm assuming it's the drive. please help!

Is the drive formatted for PC or Mac?

  • ohprinceofsp Mar 22, 2011

i believe it's formatted for pc, since i was using a pc before this, but not too sure. tried plugging it into my pc and it wouldn't read at all, but it turns on and everything. again, i used it briefly at work today on the mac and it worked fine....came home, and nothing. weird. didn't do anything different.

tried it again on my work pc and it read fine. this is weird. don't know what that's about. hope it's not my brand new mac. not even a week old. :/

My Pleomax external hard drive stopped working on my MacBook (OS Maverick). It worked for one day and that was it. It flashes green and red when connected.

Probably not an issue with the MacBook but with the Pleomax drive. Be sure the drive is getting enough power to begin with. If it came with a 2 headed USB cable be sure to connect BOTH USB connectors to the Mac. You may also want to try the drive while your COMPUTER is plugged in and charging. Laptops and external drives don't always get along due to power differences and specifically laptops who do not want to waste their battery power on an external drive. If all else fails, try the drive on another computer just to make sure it is a drive problem and then contact the manufacturer for a repalcement drive.

I just bought a Seagate 2 TB desktop drive for Mac and PC, it works on my PC but nothing happens on the MacBook

If the Seagate hard drive has been formatted on a PC in NTFS then the MAC cannot read and write to this hard drive.
To exchange data between the PC and MAC then the Seagate hard drive needs to be formatted on a PC in FAT32 not NTFS.

Hello barry_carrot,

I work for Imation and we would advise you to try the following option:
restart to your Macbook without the external drive attached.
Open your Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilites folder).
Plug in your hard drive.
If the drive shows up in the list in the Disk Utility First Aid window, click on the drive, and then click on Repair Disk. If the process repairs anything, run the same Repair Disk a second time to see that it runs with no problems found. If some other error comes up, or it won't repair a problem found, then I would recommend moving this drive to a PC, and trying a repair tool through Windows.

Note: if you see the "repair" option grayed out, Going back to Disk Utility - (you won't be able to select Verify/Repair Disk Permissions), but Verify or Repair Disk should be available if you click on the device (the entry showing the manufacturer's info for your external drive).

If that doesn't help you, please contact the Imation product support department at the phone number 1-800-351-8186 option 2.

Transfer macbook pro music

There are a number of different ways to do this. If you have an external hard drive, all you need to do is drag the Macintosh HD/[your user name here]/Users/Music/iTunes folder onto the external drive, connect the external drive to your Macbook, and drag and drop the iTunes folder from the external drive onto the iTunes icon in the dock.

If you have an iPod classic, you can do this:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1329

...or if you don't have a huge library and/or have a lot of CDs/DVDs you can use, you can back up your library to disc:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1382

...or if you have anything other other sort of iPod, iPhone, or iPad, you can rip the music from it using this utility:

http://thelittleappfactory.com/irip/

You will need to plug the harddrive into a windows based pc todo a format or run BOOTCAMp on your Mac to gain a windows portion. However the easiest way is using a low lever formating utility form western digital : http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?lang=en

Hi,

First let me let out a LMAO to there website. Although the Windows and Mac operating systems are still somewhat different in how they work, the computer you're running OSX on IS a standard "IBM-Clone" or PC and therefore and potential hardware issues are identical regardless of wether it is running Mac or Windows.

The Blue light blinking generally means one of only two things, one the hard drive is active and currently reading or writing files, or two, it has a hardware problem. The fact the light is on usually means you have a good power supply but there are numerous other problems that could cause this.

If you just bought the drive and haven't got any data that is only on this drive, take it back to the store you bought it at and ask to have it replaced as a faulty drive. If you do have any crucial data on the drive already, respond back and I will be happy to offer advice on how to retrieve it.
