You need to configure your router.
For that Connect your router to computer with ethernet cable then you can access it with following default link.
http://192.168.15.1
or
http://192.168.2.1
If you are not able to access it with above ip then check your computers ip address gateway ip is your router ip try with it.
Then it ask for user name and password.
Type user as "admin" and password as "admin" or "password" or blank.
Then you can see configuration page of router.

Click on wireless settings change channel type to 3 or 6 or 11 and save so you get better signal.
Then save settings and restart router.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks for using FixYa.

You will need to check the settings of the router. You are able to go online when you connect the computer directly to the modem. Your internet service provider is DSL. You can try to reconfigure the router. Press the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. release it. unplug the power to the router. plug it back in. wait for 1 minute and try to reconfigure the router. When I have my router hooked directly to my computer it works fine. When I hook it up so the kids can use their laptops, the speed is very slow.

I think the first thing you should try to verify if the signal is strenght enough, because if it is not so the speed will be slow too.

Can you hook up the router without hooking to a tower

Yes the Router can be hooked to a high speed modem like DSL or Cable, that high speed connection would go from the modem to the "internet" port of the router. Now the router would need to be configured if you need wireless, and then a temporary connection to a tower or laptop would be needed.

ATT/SBC gateway router....

Take the ethernet cable from modem to PC and hook it into the router(modem to router)...run another ethernet cable from the router back to that PC(router to PC). All you machines should be fine then.

I have a two wire router trying to hook up to run my laptop

You need to run from the DSL modem into the ethernet port at the very top of the 1701hg. Use your other 4 ports below to send one the computer and one to your vonage. You will no longer need to "jump" though your vontage unit. Other than connecting the power cables, you are all hooked up.

when you say that everything works when the router is NOT hooked up to the PC, does that mean that you have the DSL modem connected directly to the computer?

then, when you hook up the router, you're connecting it BETWEEN the DSL modem and your computer?

You probably need to log in to your router and set it up to connect through the DSL modem to the internet: it may not do it automatically.

is this computer running windows XP?

if so, go to control panel, then network connections.

if you double click on the local area connection, and go to the support tab, it should list something like this:

Address type: assigned by DHCP
IP address: 10.0.1.100
Default gateway: 10.0.1.1

Try opening internet explorer, and typing in the numbers it lists for default gateway.  hopefully, that will bring up the configuration screen for your router.
