Question about Samsung S2 - 1TB USB 2.0 Portable -Midnight Black Hard Drive

1 Answer

I have just bought a samsung S2 1TB portable drive. It works in everthing I have tried apart from my pc. At first i thought it might be power related after trying a powered usb hub and y usb cable, it's still the same. On every other device the HD will power on and the led stays on. With the pc it powers on but the led flashes. Sometimes slow blink sometimes rapid flicker. The pc makes the sound to say a usb has been connected..then disconnected, then connected again. This is the sound only as nothing appears on pc.. device manager shows no probs. Any ideas? Cheers, Sweeney

Head over to samsung's download page: Pick out your model and download the diagnostic software. I think it's called something like Diagnostic Software for portable HDD.

Samsung M3 Portable Drive Diagnostic Fail Message

I would try creating a new folder (maybe TEST) on your portable drive, and saving 3-4 files (as copies) from your hard drive, say, a MS Word file, an Excel file and a .jpg picture. Close down your computer, remove the portable drive. Then start up computer again, when ready insert portable drive.
See if your computer recognises it, and then try to open the files you saved onto it. If that is OK it sounds like you do not have a problem. But treat it with caution for a week or two.

Hello! I recently bought a samsung portable

The software is telling you one thing and the Webmaster another. I would trust what the software error is saying to you. I can't even register my Samsung Tab 3 on their site, it asked me to enter the purchase date which I did, 11/16/13. When I tried submitting the form, I got an error telling me the Tab 3 was manufactured 11/30/13, making my purchase date incorrect. Really??!!! My Best Buy receipt didn't lie and I was there at the store that very day, and had purchased the Tab 3.

About 2 months ago I bought a samsung s2 portable 1Tb. It has worked fine until yesterday. It slipped down from where it was laying (while plugged in and running) and was hanging the 20 cm usb-cabel. Now I...

Hanging by the 20cm USB cable?

The cable could be stretched, and wires broken inside.
The cable to small circuit board, inside the case, could have broken solder joints.
The circuit board inside the Samsung's case could be broken.

Inside that small outer case of the Samsung portable is a laptop size Harddrive.
The harddrive measures 2.5 inches across in width.

(6.4cm. In comparison a desktop size harddrive is 3.5 inches across in width, or 8.9cm)

The harddrive is a SATA unit also.

This is a general example of a 2.5 SATA harddrive,

Inside the outer case (External Enclosure) is also a small circuit board (PCB)
The harddrive plugs into the small circuit board, and the circuit board has a USB cable attached to it.

(Or there is a small cable from circuit board to harddrive. Then a USB cable to the circuit board)

I would suggest removing the 2.5 SATA harddrive, and install it into an economical external enclosure.

Example of a 2.5 SATA External Enclosure,

Basic guidance in removing the Harddrive from a Samsung S2 Portable,

1) It looks as though the outside front is a thick cover like a label. It may be that you peel back the corners, and there will be a screw in each corner.

(For example; Where it states Samsung. Go to the right corner. Does this cover-like material peel back? Is there a screw underneath? Remove it.
Go to the opposite corner. Now above to the left and right corners)

The unit looks to come apart in two halves.

Might just be held together by sticky tape.

Here are some videos performing opening the external enclosure, (Case) of other external portable harddrives,

There are other related videos. In general most are not very professional, but get the job done.

Samsung NP x120 will not boot, Error sounds one long beep followed by thre short ones

Hi pkb747,
I see that you might have an issue related to the memory modules of your portable system. One thing that you need to secure is the manual of your portable system. But usually it will be very easy to work with a portables memory module unless your memory module is seated underneath your keyboard. Normally the memory module is available underneath the portable system. What you need to do is open a panel underneath your portable system to gain access to your memory module.
First try to re-seat the memory module of your portable system. There will be two latches that will hold your memory module. Just push it apart to release the memory module. Erase the copper tips with a pencil eraser and sit it back on the portable system. Cross your fingers and start your computer. If it works then good. If it does not, try to remove the memory modules one at a time. Try to see what memory module is causing the problem so that you may be able to replace them.
Good luck. :)

Hi, I have dropped my iOmega portable HDD. The actual drive inside the iOmega case is a Samsung 1TB HM100UI. Now when connecting power to the drive I get a sequence of beeps/sounds then nothing. The...

If you remove the drive and connect it to a pc using the sata cables it could work if you only damaged the controler.

In my experience it is more likely the drive itself is damaged. If this happens and the read/write head or the magnetic store is physically damagedthe only way is to ask a data recovery company. The good news is that recovering a single drive is relatively cheap......

My Samsung 250 GB portable HDD is not recognised now. It was working for last 2 years without any problem. Recently I found my PC infected by "WIN32" & Torjan viruses. It may be the reason. But I tried...

Try connecting it to another computer.
If it does not work, then either the disk-drive has failed,
or the USB-cable is damaged,
or the USB-to-disk-drive interface inside the case has failed.

Is the SAMSUNG still under warranty? (1 year? 2 years? 3 years?)
If so, SAMSUNG will replace it, at minimal cost to you.

Acer aspire one note book problems start up won't let me reboot quick blue screen message tried everthing in :f8: options and won't let me in to safe mode

I have the same problem with my acer laptop 3680. It is stuck on the BIOS screen with "press f2" at the bottom. I can get into the menu by pressing f2 repeatedly as soon as I hit the power button, and was able to change the boot order to CD first, but it will not boot from the Windows CD even though the CD drive is flashing and I can hear the CD spinning - same as the hard drive - still get the BIOS screen. I took it completely apart, dusted with compressed air, replaced RAM (new), and still same f2 screen. I removed the hard drive and booted up and the BIOS screen did not appear, but it said "Drive not found". Therefore, I think I have a dead BIOS battery since the BIOS isn't present without the HD. I did not notice a battery when I had it apart and have read that it is soldered in and almost impossible to replace. I ordered another motherboard on eBay (search: motherboard 3680) for $89 BIN today and will post again with results hopefully next week.
Have you tried pressing ALT+F10 on boot? If lucky, that will get the recovery console and you'll lose all data. I was able to save everything from my HD by plugging it into my PC with a USB/IDE adaptor which can be bought for cheap online and in most computer stores.

My Passport Drive is no longer recognized by windows

Check to see if the drive is available in disk management, if so and it's got a blue bar at the bottom, try changing the drive letter. If not, try the following:

Normally with the passport drives, you receive a shorter USB cable (this is because the drive relies on power from the PC, which your normal length USB cannot offer sufficiently. If you are using a short cable, try connecting the drive to the back of your desktop PC, this generates more power than the ports on the front (the ports on the front are actually hubs). If none of these options work try it on another PC, using the steps above.

If you still have an issue, the drive has most likely failed and you will need to get data recovery done to retrieve your data. If you do so, contact samsung for warranty information, so that your warranty doesn't become void.

You have problem with lease assembly. It may work if you clean it. You may use laser cleaner disk or take it apart and clean the lens with alcohol.

2 month old Phillips portable DVD player can't get past loading

Clean the laser lens gently with a foam cleaner using a cotton swab & leave to dry.

Also, with the power off, gently push the laser lenscarriage all the way outwards from the centre. There may be debris on the tracks.
