I just turned on our pilotless oven and noticed the smell of gas. Turned it off naturally. The stove worked fine earlier in the day.

Hi,

You could have a weak ignitor which can cause a smell of gas, I would have it checked unless you have a way to test for amperage. Test with amp probe should read 3.2 -3.6 amps if less than 3.0 replace ignitor. I hope this helps.
Good Luck

When i turn on oven all i smell is gas i cleaned with a wire brush still nothing. also is the pilot light always have to be on and can you see it when oven is off

Most gas ovens that aren't electronic ignition usually have a pilot light.
Usually one in the oven area and one for each burner. (Sometimes shared between two burners.)
These pilot lights must lit at all times...otherwise it won't light up and you'll smell gas.
Usually the pilot light is in the very back of the oven and can be seen with the broiler drawer opened.

There is a small set screw located at the pilot light assembly in the oven and also at every burner.
This allows you to adjust pilot light up or down, thereby letting you set pilot light flame to a level that doesn't get blown out by a draft...or you can turn it off completely.

If you use that set screw to turn off the pilot light gas, you'd need to strike a match to light the oven or burners everytime you needed them.

Gas stove When I turn on the oven, I smell gas,

This is more than likely the igniter to be sure you will need to do an amp draw on the igniter. To do this watch the video on troubleshooting a gas oven at www.appliancehelponline.com/servicemanual.html

Oven is slow ot light and has a gas smell when

Hi, this sounds like a weak igniter, it would have to be a gas oven and the symptoms usually are: takes longer than normal to ignite the burner, may or may not smell gas in the oven, if it does light the burner, there may be delayed ignition (pop), does not maintain set temperature or burner does not come on fully, eventually won't heat at all. On gas ovens, a glo igniter is like a light bulb, the more you cook, the faster it wears out. Bottom line, needs to be replaced. Good luck.

Where the pilot light for the oven is located is a bulb that keeps the gas on. It is called a thermocouple. These get old and fail. They are easy to replace if you have some basic tools and mechanical ability. They are usually not too expensive-around $10-20.

On my gas kenmore oven, the oven first wouldn't get up to temperature, and now 3 months later it just doesn't heat at all. There is no gas smell or indication that there is a pilot light. My gas broiler...

Replace the glowbar ignitor in the oven. Turn off the gas supply. Remove the oven racks. Remove the base pan in the oven to access the ignitor. Most plug in. Some have wire nuts.
Your local appliance parts store will need the model number or the ignitor for a correct replacement.

The oven wont light. Panel light comes on and

Attach a amp meter to the ignitor wire. If you read 3 amps or less, replace the ignitor. 3 amps or more replace the gas valve.

Top oven bake igniter comes on, but gas does not.

Check the voltage on the 2 wires going to the oven gas valve. If you get 120v when the ignitor is on with no gas coming out, you have a bad gas valve. If you get voltage, but it is not much, it is the ignitor. The ignitors don't burn out completely on the ovens, they just get a little dim and no longer ignite the gas and eventually will not turn on the gas valve
