Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have an AT&T 2-wire router that connected a desktop via ethernet and a dell laptop via wireless connection. The owner of the desktop is moving so disconnected the desktop from the ethernet cord only. Now the laptop is not connecting to the internet. Should disconnecting the desktop from the ethernet connection have effected the wireless connection to the laptop?

No. But in this case you probably have to type in the wep key into your laptop again.

Wireless connection works fine from the d-link router but the desktop linked from the phoneline keeps going offline. Why?

You've omitted some information about your hardware & configuration & connections.

You should have:

1. cable-modem connected to cable socket (or DSL-modem connected to telephone wall-jack);
2. router connected via Ethernet cable to the cable-modem (or DSL-modem)
3. desktop computer connected via Ethernet cable to the desktop computer
4. wireless device (iPod or netbook or notebook) connected over the "ether" to the router -- this connection will stay "up" almost "forever" (as long as there is AC-power to the router and power to the wireless device).

Which parts & connections do you have?

Connecting Laptop wireless and Desktop wired to the router

Do you need to see the desktop or just share folders from each other? If the latter then you need to do the following:

Use Windows Explorer and select a folder you want to share. Right click and select sharing and security.

On the sharing tab click on Share this folder. Enter a share name ( I like to enter the PC name _folder name; Rick1_Downloads)

Click on Permissions. If your ok with everyone using the PC's and Laptops having access then highlight Everyone and click on Full Control.

Do this on each PC and Laptop.

That should be it or darned near close.
