Question about Western Digital Passport WDXMS800TN 80 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

WD Passport 80GB

When I connect the drive to any computer, The New hardware wizard starts and wants a driver. I doesn't find one of course, and the system will not recognize the drive. Is there anything that can be done?

This solution was in the knowledge base at Western Digital. I have heard of it working due to issues with Vista. I did try this several times, even to the point of hooking up other USB devices to get the INFCACHE.1 to reinstall, but all attempts were failures for the WD passport.

    Thanks

Hi,

go to start->search->all files and folder

search the file named INFCACHE.1
delete that file and reebot your pc.
The computer should now recognize the HD.

Western Digital WD Passport 250GB Portable Drive 250 GB Hard Drive is causing my computer in windows to nott show the drive for t and saying i/o device error to appear. what would cause that and what

The hardware that you are trying to access is damaged or failing.
The device drivers for the hardware are faulty or incompatible. There is a connection problem such as a bad cable

click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll through all of your devices

if you see a yellow question or exclamation mark ? ! or a red X you will need to update the drivers for this device right click select update driver/reinstall driver

if you can see your usb device but its not working scroll to Ports(Com&Ltd) right click to update driver

if you computer came with a motherboard disk the drivers could be on it

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle to shutdown or fail to detect a hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions IDE,SATA

the leads from your MOTHERBOARD TO THE HARD DRIVE make sure they have a

secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty if its a flat 40pin ide

this will be the first to fail

make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions

or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs power and data to travel through every working device and continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

hope this helps

Why wont my Western Digital WD Passport 250GB Portable Drive 250 GB Hard Drive work?

Several possibilities:

* bad USB port in your computer (try another USB port)
* messed-up copy of Windows (try connecting to a different computer)
* damaged USB cable between computer and the Passport (replace it)
* bad disk-drive inside the enclosure (replace it)
* bad USB-to-disk-drive adapter (buy a new "empty" enclosure)

Check the warranty on it, to see if W.D. will replace it, at minimal cost to you. If the warranty has expired, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- buy a new Passport through their web-site, and you qualify for a discount on your purchase.

My computer does not recognise my WD element portable drive and I have no soft ware to install it, what can I do?

Connect it to a different computer. If it still is not detected, then there is a hardware problem. Exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.
Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program; buy a new disk-drive from the W.D. web-site, at a good discount.

For Western Digital Passport make sure you use the prigina;l USB cable or a replacement. They are not all the same. WD uses a propriatary cable with an extra power line I believe.

Getting an old Dell Dimension to recognize a WD Passport

In the end, I assigned a different drive letter to the device and it worked.

There's a lot of info out there on how to assign a letter. Here's one link:

WD Passport Hard Drive Malfunction

Unfortunately, you have probably lost all the files on the drive. It may be possible to take it to a PC Repair shop and have them run specialist software on it, although the clicking sound indicates a hardware failure, rather than software. You have my deepest apologies, but this does happen... although rarely.

WD Passport 3200 isn't assigned a drive letter when plugged in

try to right on my computer and click on Manage
then click on Disk Management
Observe if you are able to see Drive 0 <- which is your internal drive in your computer.

Observer also if you are able to see Drive 1 <- this will indicate that the system recognise that an external USB drive was attached to it.

Right click on the area right next to the box that says Hard Drive 1 and see if you can find the wordings "Change Drive Letters and Paths".

If you manage to go that far, click on any of your preferred drive letters, for example Z: and then click OK. And then go to Windows Explorer or My Computer and see if Z: existed there.

My PC is not recognizing my WD Passport 120GB USB external drive. I used just few days ago and connected the usb cable to my computer and the WD Passport drive and not recognized on my 2 laptop and 2 other...

I have the 80GB WD passport and it suddenly stopped working one day.  The unit lights up but nothing else.  Finally I cracked the case open and found, as I suspected, that the drive is simply a SATA laptop drive with a SATA-to-USB conversion card built in.  I suspected that the card was **** so I disconnected it and used a USB hard drive adapter (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=3770&name=USB_Hard_Drive_Adapter) and I can read/write to the drive just fine.  Best part is that the adapter I use has its own power supply so I'm not pulling juice through the USB cable for a SATA drive.
Even though mine "works" again I don't recommend these drives to anyone.  They're just not sturdy enough or well designed.
