Question about Seagate 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive ST903204EXA101-RK Drive Case

2 Answers

My computer won't discover my brand new 250 gb Seagate hard drive. It's connected by a USB port in a HP compaq computer running windows xp version 2002. It didn`t come with any software and says it`s plug and go. I have done all of the brands suggesting troubleshooting solutions and gotten nowhere. Any suggestions?

Most likely it isn't formatted for Windows. I'd check in the Logial Disk Manager in Windows XP to format the drive.

It is possible the usb port is not giving enough power for the device, theres a cable the allows you to connect the device to 2 usb ports to get more juice, maybe that could help.

XP is a dead OS.
100% dead. and not supported now. by MS or HP.
but XP needs SP3, or USB will be bad
XP always had bad USB for years until , all patches were done.
The USB on XP are horrible.
you need good USB so all devices are PnP recognized

and USB2 currents are weaker than USB 3.

win 7 vista click on computer sys prop device manager see if drive is connected hit update driver or roll back. same with usb system on win xp right click my comp. go to prop, then device manager let me know if this helps. but really important to make sure that you are plugged into a usb port in the back of the pc not thru a hub

I have a seagate external drive of a capacity of 250GB. the free space available is 177 GB. the hard disk is very slow? please help?

Are you connecting this high-speed ("USB 2.0") device to a low-speed ("USB 1.1") USB-port on your computer? If so, and your computer has a "USB 2.0" port, connect your device to that port.
If not, then purchase an add-in PCI card for your computer, to add "USB 2.0" port(s).

> Seagate ST3200826AS

This is a Seagate 200GB SATA-interface disk-drive.
Open "My Computer", and point at the icon for 'C:' drive -- is it a 200GB disk-drive?

Double-click that "yellow exclamation" item. Click "install new driver" or "update driver".
If Windows asks permission to access the Internet to search for a new driver, allow it.

Note that the USB ports on some laptops are "weaker" (same voltage but lesser amperage) than USB ports on some desktops. So, your FreeAgent might not be getting enough power to function correctly. There exist 'Y' USB cables -- connect the 'Y' to 2 USB ports on your computer, to draw twice as much power.

Hi. Is the power light on the drive on? Is it flashing (this indicates an error)? If it is check the usb port you are using. You cannot use a usb hub, a usb port on a monitor or any other port that is not directly connected to the computers power supply. If you are using a dock make sure that both of the plugs are connected to powered usb ports. I could not get this drive to run until I plugged it into the right port. Use only the short cable that comes with the drive or the dock that is made to use with the drive. I hope this suggestion helps.

Tryi8ng to install portable 120GB hard drive (seagate)

If your USB ports do not supply enough power (older computers) then the drive may fail to show up in My Computer.
The Seagate should have a special Y cable. There are two USB connectors on one end that must both plug into your computer - one for data and power - the other for power only. The other end of the cable has the mini USB which plugs into the Seagate.
