SOURCE: i have a husqvarna 172 ride-on lawnmower. Running

This unit probably has a safety switch built into it and it could be below the gas tank. If this switch isn't adjusted properly then it's designed to cut off the motor. I think you should concentrate on that before attempting anything else.

SOURCE: Blades will not engage on Husqvarna riding mower.

Could be a broken belt, loose belt (stretched) or something is under the mower deck jamming the blades. (stick for an example)

SOURCE: When engaging the blade for my Husqvarna riding

It's possible the repair folks didn't properly reinstall the mower deck belt. Check that it's in place, and under good tension. If that's OK, look at the wires to the mower engagement switch (PTO switch) and make sure the connections are on tight. Then check the motor pulley where the PTO clutch is, making sure those wires still in place.

Jim, I believe your tractor has an electronic knob for engagement (if I'm right in you having a matching post about a husqvarna with a knob for engagement. And it also has a PTO clutch off the motor. Having a little slack in the belt is not bad if it's not so much that it doesn't grab at at all. Does anything happen at all when you pull the switch? If nothing happens at all, the switch could be bad, the PTO clutch could need adjustment or be bad, OR you may simply have a very weak battery that isn't supplying enough current to engage the PTO properly under loads. Sometimes the batteries and charging units in riding mowers are very borderline in being able to handle the loads and a weak battery can cause unsuspected problems.

Belt. came off... pulling up blade engagement knob nothing seems to happen.....I have trackter up on blocks with blade cutting height at 1 with engine runnig the blade engagement knob switch ...

sounds like a bad PTO, that is the electrical gizmo on the bottom of the engine's driveshaft which engages the bottom pulley, running the deck. you might luck out and find the fuse is blown so follow the wire from the PTO back until you find the fat part in the wire. the fat part is an in line fuse holder with a fuse in it. if the fuse is bad and blows again, you need a new PTO

Check to see if you left the blades engaged. There is a safety switch that prevents starting with blades engaged. Easy to miss, happened to a friend of mine last month.

When I engage the blades nothing happens. Any ideas?

I have a YTH 150 with a similar problem. The mower has an electrically powered clutch which is activated when you engage the blade button. If the drive belt has no tension on it, engaging the clutch doesn't do anything because the drive wheel will just spin but the blades won't. Look for broken tension springs on the mower deck and replace.

I have an A680L John deere riding lawnmower. The transmission does not seem to engage. It burns the belts.

Burning belts sounds like something is locked up. Make sure there's nothing wrapped around any of the blades and that they turn freely.
