Question about Schwinn 405 Full Suspension Mountain Bike (26Inch Wheels Small)

I just bought a Schwinn Discovery and the front fork is loose in the frame. When I hit the brakes, the fork rocks back and forth. I am not sure how to tighten it up?

If you bouht it from a Bike Shop, make them do it. And complain.

If you bought it at a box store don't bother, they're incompetent.

Scroll down to Headset Assembly

Remember, the side bolts on the stem loosen it so adjustment can be made with the top cap bolt. You tighten the side bolts to lock in that adjustment. The top cap bolt is only for MAKING the adjustment, not KEEPING it.

1991 mercury sable rear R wheel is not moving

Your brakes are probably rusted up. From sitting and not moving the inside of your brake drum has a lip rusted around the brake shoe. If you get an some solid dry pavement lightly rock the car back and forth from drive to reverse. This should free up the wheel. If it does not then you will need to get the wheel and drum off and see what is the problem in there.

I have just bought a new SCHWINN CORONADO WOMAN BIKE and i'm trying to assemble it. The distance between the fork dropoouts is bigger than the front wheel axis. The only possible assembly of the front...

When you tighten the quick-release skewer, the two sides of the fork will be pushed inwards over the axle. So basically, just tighten it up & it should be just fine. If not- take it back to the store you got it from!

Hi ryanwfields...
Check your tightness on the nut that tightens the front end to the frame, if it is loose it will cause the problem you describe.

In putting together my 26"

Loosen both nuts on front wheel.
Stand bike straight up, or set bike upside down on seat and handlebars.
With fingers on fork and thumb on wheel, pull wheel so it is centered on fork.

Now tighten one nut part way. Keep holding wheel.
You may need somebody to help.
Then tighten other nut.
Go back to fist nut and tighten a bit more.
Repeat back and forth tightening until nuts are tight and wheel is in center of fork.

Can I add a front hand brake to my Schwinn Electra Huli Huli Bike? It only has coaster brakes now. Thanks.

If there is a hole in the crown of the front fork (look directly above the tire where the two fork blades come together) then you can attach a brake.

You will want to go into your local bike shop and have them install the brake properly. They will also be the ones to tell you which type of brake will work with your fork/ rim combination. This is easy when the bike is in front of a qualified mechanic, but impossible without seeing it.

My schwinn 418 is making a nose like something is loose and hitting something when the wheels rotate. Machine works fine except nose. I need help opening the main frame to find loose part.

Take it to a bicycle repair shop, they can tell you what is wrong. No one can diagnose it without seeing the problem. It could be loose cones in your wheel, brakes hitting the rim because it is bent, or maybe in your cranks, see what I mean? What main frame are you talking about? Never heard of it and I have been in the bicycle business for close to 40 years.

I have a 1988 1500 i am getting a noise like a rattle coming from the front wheel this is after i had a new tyre fitted checking the brake calipers i see that the right side is tight and the left side is...

The caliper should be bolted on tightly at the mounting points, but should float back and forth so the pads do not wear unevenly. Other things to check for odd front end rattles. Are your steering head bearings tight? That can cause rattling or knocking as well as handlebar shaking. A bad front wheel bearing can cause rattling or knocking (one side is bad and the wheel is twisting/rocking. Elevate the front wheel , grab it in the 10 and four position, and see of you can notice the wheel moving where the bearing hits the axle. Fork lower has worn out and the bushing is banging when it rocks. Rare but possible. Should see unusual wear on tube and movement wear tube meets lower. With wheel off , grab bottom of lower tube and top of lower tube check for movement.

I would like to service my Schwinn Mesa, Is there a manual? If not what needs to be done for a general service?

Check, clean, and lube all the brake and shifter cables. Check and possibly replace brake pads. Check for any play in the headset ( this is the tube that carries the bearings for the handlebars and front fork ). Clean and lube the chain, gears, and derailers. After all of that just check the torque on all the hardware and make sure nothing is coming loose.
