It's likely one of three things. Either your ribbon cable that connects the LCD to the board has come loose from it's connector, it has broken, or the LCD has gone out. These are the most common. Depending on which it is will depend on the steps you'll need to take to replace it. However if you got it for Christmas and it was new it is under warrenty and you can contact Nintendo for a free replacement DS.

This is easy to fix. The problem is:
a. The disks are dusty or the place where you put it in is dusty. Just blow in it.
b. You put it through the wash... This will just ruin it and you can't really help this.. Just live with it!

Have you checked to see if any of the contacts in the actual console seem to be faulty?
If the problem is just with DS games, have a check by inserting a GBA game into the other side and see if it recognises it. That should tell you where the problem is. If there's a small bit of dust covering one of the contacts in the console, just blow into it a little and see if it comes free.
