The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can't flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won't turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it's bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it's in the defrost mode.

If you have a defrost timer you can test it. It can be located under the fridge behind the kick panel on the front. Some are in the fridge with the controls at the top. You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer because that means the timer is not running. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

If you have an adaptive defrost control instead of a timer, replace it if the heater and thermostat test good. It is located in the fridge with the controls in some models and on the back in others.

If you refrigerator is not defrosting the most likely problem with your model is a defective defrost control 5303918476_Defrost_Control

To initiate defrost, depress the fresh food light switch 5
times in 6 seconds (light bulb must be working). To terminate
defrost, depress the fresh food light switch 5 times in 6 seconds. If the refrigerator won't go into defrost, verify that you have continuity in the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. If they check out good, but you aren't getting 120vac from the ADC board, replace the ADC board.
If your refrigerator uses a mechanical timer for defrost control, then you still need to check the continuity of the defrost heater and thermostat. If they're both good, replace the defrost timer.
BTW, all the foregoing applies to other brands, too. Even the part link for the mechanical defrost timers can be used for all brands so equipped. The only real difference is in the ADC control and the procedure for initiating defrost. For more about that, see this page.

Defrost Problem

Defrost problems can cause both sections not to work. You need to find out why it's not defrosting. There are three things that cause a defrost problem:defrost heater, defrost thermostat and defrost control.

If you have an older refrigerator, it probably has a mechanical defrost control. Find it and turn it clockwise until the refrigerator cuts off. (Note that the defrost control is normally located either in the refrigerator near the cold control or at bottom behind the kick plate). To view a video of testing a manual defrost timer. If your refrigerator is newer it will have an electronic defrost control and you won't be able to turn to defrost. Most refrigerators with electronic controls have some method of maunaly going into a defrost. You will need to refer to the tech sheet or service manual for this procedure on your model. Now that it's in defrost, wait a few minutes. If the defrost heater gets hot, replace defrost control. If it doesn't get hot, then the problem is either the heater or the thermostat.

At this point, you need to melt the ice. The best way to melt the ice is to use either a hair dryer or heat gun. Be careful with the heat gun you can melt your fridge pretty quick.

Once the ice is gone, you can check the heater by unplugging wires and using an ohmmeter to check for continuity. If you have continuity, the heater is good and you should replace thermostat. If you don't replace the heater, at this point you won't be able to check the thermostat but if the heater is good replace it.

Why mu refrigerator rrtg21pabb ia working but not freeze

If the refrigerator is not defrosting, the defrost control board might be defective. The defrost control board monitors several conditions and determines how often to run the defrost cycle. If the board fails, the refrigerator will not go into the defrost cycle. Eventually, ice will build up on the evaporator coil and then the refrigerator and or freezer will not stay cold enough. This will depend on where the evaporator is located. It's prudent to check the defrost heater and defrost thermostat for continuity before replacing the defrost control board.

The main control behind fridge would most likely control defrost

Stopped cooling completely, still running

If the compressor is starting and running normally try performing a complete defrost. If the fridge restarts working after defrost then it was either damper system, defrost control, or in some case electronic control of temperature.

If the fridge restarts working after defrost and fails again after days or weeks, then you have a defective defrost system.

If the compressor is working all the time and it is none of the above there may be low gas pressure because of a micro leak.

If the compressor does not start check compressor, starter relay or capacitor and depending on the model temperature control.

Try the defrost first. Problems caused by defrost system may result in same symptoms and are quite common.

No power & not running

Hi, you have to check few things, first of all check power at the outlet for 120 volts. If the light in the fridge works, the defrost timer, cold control and possibly the wiring are the most common things that can make a fridge sit there and be dead, not working.
The defrost timer might be stuck in defrost, turn the timer screw to advance the timer and if the fridge comes back on, replace the defrost timer. You can join the wires together to by-pass the cold control for a test, if the fridge comes on, replace the cold control...

Take care

Auto defrost wont work check heater all good

Not very familiar with fisher however I have worked on a few for my friends. Usually the only other two things in a system would be your defrost termination and defrost timer. The more likely and cheaper of the two would be the termination which would be located on the top of the evaporator coils. You can usally visually inspect these and if they are bad they look (popped out). Lastly and most unlikely would be the defrost control. Usually if the control is bad the unit will be completely dead. Let me know if you need more help past the termination.

GE Fridge not cooling well, frost in freezer, back wall and coils

How to check everything
check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.
