I have a gateway 4540 laptop. my daughter gave me a cd to play that she burned from the internet. I put it in and all of a sudden an error msg came - up something about cant find the site and the cd drive disappeared!!! when i go to 'my computer' it doesnt even show a D: drive! I was told maybe the pc dumped the driver. i have no idea but the cd is stuck in the computer still. please HELP!!

Turn your laptop off. Locate small hole next on disk drive and push in small wire or paper clip. It should release your CD from laptop. Once it's out, restart your laptop. Your D: drive should restore itself.

Is there a little hole on the cd rom drive?
if there is one in front of it you can use a small paper clip and insert it in the hole.
push straight in and not at a angle and the tray should eject.

Is this a laptop or a desktop?

If it's a desktop then to back up your files you would want to plug the hard drive on another computer and check if your hard drive will be detected.
If no hard drive is detected it means that your hard drive is bad and recovering the data would be difficult.
If it's a laptop you may have to use an enclosure so that you can plug the hard drive on a different computer.
That way you'll be able to back up your data and do the reinstall.
