Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Monogram 42 built in freezing at top, just cold at bottom, not freezing

From lem106
no ice buildup, defroster seems to be working. with door open, preesed switch and fan runs and you can feel cold air blowing on your feet. Any other ideas? Refridgerator fine at a 5 setting. Freezer setting at 9 (full) and compressor runs continuous. Compressor going bad? Freon leak?

The next thing i would check on is the coils. make sure they are clean and the air around them is not obstructed and the condenser fan is running.  i am kinda scratching my head on this one because the freezer is working good on the upper shelves but not the bottom; even though heat rises. oh well, we will figure it out.
also if you have a thermometer that would be great. it would help to know the actual  temperature of the freezer, refrigerator and compressor/ coils. the best time to test the temperatures is in the morning when the doors have been shut all night.

  • as far as your questions
  • the compressor could be getting weak, but i always eliminate all other possibilities before suspecting the most expensive problem.
  • if it is a freon leak, then the refrigerator would progressively get worse and completely quit cooling within a day or so.
btw, make sure the lights are going out inside the bottom of the freezer when you **** the door.

its possible that its either short of gas or the little fan motor in frezzer/fridge is not working, but if its only making ice now and then its sounds like a gas shortage

your defrost heater behind the inside rear freezer panel is open or the defrost thermostat is bad and the ice buildup on the coils is probably touching the fan blades that move the cold air from the evaporator coil

I have this same problem. Now, the freezer will not get cold enough, but still water runs down into the ice bin and just turns into a big solid block of ice. The water is dripping from the top of the freezer compartment. I have disconnected the water coming to the refrig to not allow it to make ice, but still happening. Please post if you have found a solution? Defroster issues?

GE Mono frig are built with shut off senser on the compressor. Wipe the condenser coil with damp cloth. This will resolve the problem. This lession cost me $160.00 from GE frig tech guy. Not to mentioned using my clean cloth and wiped for just 5 minutes.

Freezer freezes at top but not at bottom

  1. first make sure the fan is coming on in the freezer. if it is not working then the fan motor may be bad or obstructed.
  2. then Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
  • if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.

GE GSH25JSTA SS side by side fridge not cooling/freezing

In most cases it is the Defrost timer circuit. One of three things the Defrost time (most likely) it allows the cooling for a 6 to 10 hour period and the defrosting for 10 to 30 minutes to remove ice buildup, ICE BUILDUP is the main problem as it restrict air flow, the cooling air circulation through the system. You see cool air only comes in the freezer side and passes through vents (pass ways) to the refrigerator side. Ice buildup in the freezer side inhibits cooling air to the refrigerator side. You think the freezer is working, but it is only cooler because there is ice in there that you can't see. The Terminator (a LIMIT switch) opens the defrost circuit if the defrost heater gets too hot (second likely) the next is the Heater which heats for those 10 to 30 minutes to melt the ice buildup (least likely) no matter the Unit you have they all have this circuit... Hope this helps, I'm Tango

GE built in Fridge does not defrost and freezer ices up

Defrosters are commonly controlled by a primitive timer and this may have a 'dry' and a 'wet' (humid) climate setting that will cause the defroster to cycle generally every 12 or 24 hours.
If set wrong (by accident or on purpose), it can allow too much frost to accumulate before attempting to defrost.
This can cause a gradual buildup of ice.

Also the heating element for the freezer may have failed open so it never heats at all. The connections that need to be checked are often buried between the in- and outside walls.

The timer is probably still OK since you apparently aren't having a problem on the refrigerator side.
