The clicking sound is almost always a bad sign. It generally indicates a failure in the hardware. Unfortunately there's no way to tell if the failure is inside the drive or if it is on the circuit board without some serious diagnostics. I work as a data recovery specialist and see some of these drives cross my bench every month. The ones with internal damage can be very expensive to repair as they need to be disassembled in a clean room and have the pallets moved into a replacement drive shell just to get the files.

The good news is some 60% of the ones I see just have a circuit board failure and can be recovered affordably(relative standard). If you still need your files recovered and consider them worthy of a small investment, generally anywhere from $150-$350, you can request a quote by email @ "armor(dash symbol)it" at shaw.ca

We're always happy to help

My computer wont recognize my external hard drve and the io magic light is blinking

Try connecting the external hard-drive to a different computer. If it still fails, and it is still under warranty, then exercise the warranty to get it replaced.

If the warranty has expired, open the case, and remove the disk-drive, disconnecting it from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter.

Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in some desktop computer, to see if the disk is recognized.
If it is, then the USB-to-disk-drive adapter has failed, and you could go to any computer-store to buy a new external case and adapter, and mount your disk-drive inside the new case, and work with your files.

If the disk-drive is not recognized, check the warranty on the disk-drive itself.

GigaBank 250 GB USB 2.0 External hard Drive - How to open case ?

Remove the cover plate from behind the drive (where the plugs and on/off switch are.) You have to then remove the 2 screws. After that pull on the end with the blue lights to slide the hard drive out. If you have a tower computer, you can permanently install the hard drive and it should work fine as a secondary drive. Just make sure the jumper pins are set to "slave".

My computer will not read my io magic giga bank 6 gb

Was your computer ever able to recognize your GigaBank, or is it new?

The most common problem people have with a new drive not showing up in My Computer are:

1) The drive is not formatted

2) The drive letter is mapped incorrectly

You can check both of these things in Disk Management by right-clicking on My Computer and choosing Manage, then clicking on Disk Management on the left hand side.

If your drive doesn't show up in Disk Management, and you are also unable to see the drive on multiple computers, then you may be experiencing a hardware malfunction.

If you are still within your warranty period and you are experiencing a hardware malfunction, we will be happy to replace your unit for you. Specific warranty and replacement information is available at www.iomagic.com, by clicking on Support.

Have you looked both in Device Manager and in Disk Management?
Have you tried plugging your external hard drive into another computer?
If it isn't recognized on multiple computers, then you are probably experiencing a hardware failure.
There are a variety of things that can malfunction on your external hard drive:

1) The USB cable - Have you tried switching the USB cable?
2) The external hard drive casing
3)  The hard drive itself

If your hard drive casing has malfunctioned, then retrieving your data is as simple as putting the hard drive inside another hard drive enclosure.  Hard drive enclosures are available at any local computer store, and also available on our website.  Make sure to get the right size enclosure.  The I250HD35 has a 3.5" Hard Drive inside it, which is a standard desktop hard drive.

If you put your hard drive in another enclosure and it still won't show up on any of your computers, then your best bet at retrieving your data is to contact a data recovery specialist.   After you have retrieved your data, we will replace your unit if you are still within the warranty period. For specific warranty and replacement information, go to www.iomagic.com and click on Support.
