Question about Cavalry Storage Cavalry CAUH 1TB USB 3.0 Black External CAUH3701T0 USB 2.0 Hard Drive

I bought 1 TB hard disk a year ago. All of sudden it's not getting detected. not even volume label. i have very imporant data backed up. Can you offer any suggestion ?

First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine. try it in different usb ports. Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers. then check. Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter.Then restart computer then check. Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4. Let me know if you need further assistance. In my opinion, the r/w heads have crashed on the surface or malfunctioned so that the voice coil has retracted the heads and will not allow the disk to function, thus the beeping. You have to decide if the data is worth recovering, i.e many bucks for a recovery company to get your data. If you open it up, it will allow dust in that will contaminate the data. In order to recovery the data, the disk has to be opened in a ultra clean environment and the disk taken from that drive and placed in another drives electronics and heads so that the disk will operate and your data can be copied out to another drive. As you can see it is a labor intensive process that will cost. Also the data recovery company cannot or will not guarantee success, and you still pay for them to try.

I have had this hard drive for about a year now and it has been nothing but problematic. I reformatted like 4 months ago to ntcc as was advised it would make it more stable... It was great until a few days...

The bad news is that I think you have a bad drive. There's not much you can really do. A few little
things that you might try as a last ditch effort are make sure your USB connection is good use a good quality cable and hook up the drive to the back USB instead of the front this may help.
If the drive comes back alive try to backup your stuff right away. I wouldn't do this in very large
blocks and back up the most important stuff first. doing mass transfers of data can stress this drive even more.

If its a software problem, say some kind of malware is causing the problem get a copy of Linux Mint
and see if it will mount the drive. If its a malware problem Linux shouldn't be affected by it. Linux Mint is a Live Version that can be run from a CD-ROM and has all the tools to mount NTFS filesystems. and transfer data between them.

If a drive goes bad it usually gives signs it will click and whir continually with a funny rythym. If this
isn't happening then the drive may be good and the USB controller may be bad. If this is the case
the encased drive can be reomoved and unplugged from the USB controller and plugged into and
external hard drive cable or adapter.

If worse comes to worse one of your local computer repair shops may do data recovery BUT it can
be very expensive. If its your family picture album, your bands demo the've been working on for a year then going this route may be an option but backing up roms, mp3's and movies and such
will probably cost you more than its worth.

Many, many, years ago, motherboards did not support any disk-drive larger than 8GB.

Is this the first time that you have tried connecting your 1000GB disk-drive to your computer?

Did you set the jumpers on the hard drive to what you are using the drive for like master or slave or cable select. If you are putting it on the same cable as another hard drive you have to pick weather it is the master or the slave.

Hello, I just bought a Seagate Free Agent Go 1

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

Hard disk not detected

You can't do very much, the damage is already done. The only thing you can do is to remove the hard disk from the case, put it in a pc and try to access it from there - most likely you will have to use a recovery soft to get some of your files back. Once that's done test the disk for faults using HDTune, the free version. If it reports errors, even small ones, then it's dying (or already dead) - junk it and buy a new one.

Well if it is less than 2 or 3 years old you could contact them to attempt a sawp out of the drive. Over that - replace the unit. IF you do - you might want to consider a duel disk enclosure so if a drive dies, your data does not. you can build one yourself (1 TB duel drives, Raid 1) for a total of 252 bucks, with good drives (Seagate - Barracuda) Yes I swear by the Seagate Drive. For off teh shelf they have worked very well in every application I have deployed them.

I've been burned by too many single drive failures - even when I have the data backed up it is still a royal pain.

Yes, power cuts, surges, low voltage, variable voltage and any sudden changes in electricity can cause a hard drive to fail or act improperly. If the drive had failed, though, you wouldn't be able to see or do anything with the drive now. Are you able to save anything to the drive now? can you browse to it and save a small text file or document? If you can save a document and read it from the drive now, the drive isn't completely failed, and your data may still be recoverable.
