Did as directed with no change. I also connected to an XP machine with the same result.

It appears as tough the OS is expecting a master drive versus a "slave" under old IDE days. This is a USB 2.0 drive and the system reads it correctly as a Disk drive "Hitachi HTS542520K9SA00 USB Device" however it will not assign it a drive letter.

Try to install it ...Probably the installation will be automatically ...Just insert it ..and after that go to device manager if it do not start auto ..and in the device manager list click right on it ..and update driver...This will kick it to start the add new hardware wizard and install it ..This is a removable storage device ..and it should have been given a drive letter automatically in Computer folder..anyway ..Look again first maybe you missed it somehow ..and if it came with a driver install it ..or ..much more simpler is to get into control panel and start the add new hardware wizard directly and let it be installed ..if the computer do not sense it when you add it in usb ...
If it wont work ...let me know more..

By the way ..it is possible that in windows 7 to show you the device directly on the task bar ..in the left ...near the ones that are already open ...and minimized..

another thing you can do ..is to see if it is seen in control panel ..administrative tools/ computer management / disk management ...and if it seen as row ...just click on it to select ..and format it ..

First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine. try it in different usb ports. Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers. then check. Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check. Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4.
Also start computer in safe mode for that when you power up the computer press F8 key 5 to 6 times then enter in safe mode .Then restart computer then it will be assigned drive letter.

Hello there,

1. Is your Seagate portable external drive new? 2. Pug your external hard drive.
If it is follow instructions below. Guide is based on a Window7 operating system, you wont be having trouble if you're using Windows XP or Vista there will be a slight difference.

Note: you must be logged as an admin
a. Click start menu, right click-on Computer b. Left click on Manage. c. On Computer Management window. d. Left pane, Click Storage, Disk Management. you will see all available volume. e. If your Seagate is a new drive, it will appear as Un-allocated volume. f. Format the drive using NTFS file system before you can use it. you can also partition your new hard drive and assign a drive letter to the partition before you can use it.

Hopefully this guide helped. If you have questions feel free to ask me.

My pc is not recocnizing the drive at all

you may have to assign a letter to the unseen drive manually: goto start menu and right click on my computer/ select manage/ select storage/ select disk management/ check to see if the drive has a letter assigned to it...if not right click on the drive in question and select change drive letter and paths/ then give it an unassigned letter and that should do it. if not just just text me back and w'ell investigate your power supply and/or the cable(s) and usb ports. hope this helps:)

I have a verbatim external hard drive, model usb500 and my computer does not recognize it. I have it plugged into a working usb port and the blue light on the drive is on, but my computer isn't...

You need to assign a drive letter for it to show up in Windows.
Right click on My Computer, click Properties. Then go to disc management, and right click on your external hard drive, and click Assign Drive Letter, and choose a letter and it will show up in My Computer.
Good luck!

    adrianci

Alot of times with the drive letter is not assigned this means that another device is already assigned to the drive letter that the drive wants to take.

The below link will take you through changing your drive letter on your Maxtor drive.

How to use hitachi simpletouch external 320gb hard drive . i pluged in usb to computer and nothing happens. it should automatically open hard drive

    Hello

If the HHD gets power and you can feel the drive spinning, you can try these steps and see if your problem is solved. Go to:

    control panel
    Administrative tools
    Computer management
    Storage
    Disc management

Now you should see your drive in the schematic below. Right click on it and choose the option to change drive letter or paths. Now just assign a new drive letter to the drive, restart your computer and it should work fine.

If you cannot see any power light flickering or feel movement on the drive when you power it up, then there is a other problem. Hope this can help you.

    Best regards
    Andrea
