Question about Ace Hardware InSinkErator Badger 5, 1/2 HP Garbage Disposal

2 Answers

Disposer has apparent jam caused by very small piece of broken pottery. Useing the allenwrench, was able to move it back and forth a bit (which cleared a jam I think) until I was able to do a full rotation, but that didn't help. The interior blades are not stuck and rotate by hand but when the motor is started it only hums and the blades do not spin. Regarding the red reset button, could not find the button-there was a hole in the area where the reset button should be, so I am thinking that at some earlier time the button was somehow pushed in too far and now is not usable -- so-- now don't think I can actually do a "reset" any longer. Although the circuit breaker was not tripped, tried resetting it anyway thinking that perhaps that would provide a "reset" of the disposer, but that did not help. Can a reset botton on a Badger 5 disposal be fixed by a plumber? Can you provide any help or suggestions? thank you

First, unplug it from under the sink so you are sure there is no power to the unit. If it is hard wired to power, you should shut it off at the circuit breaker box.

Next find the tool that comes with all disposers and insert it into the bottom of the disposer and rock it back and forth. If it doesn't move freely, check inside the drain and see if anything is jammed in there.

The hum with no motion usually means something hard got in there, like a piece of silverware or large bone.

Getting Started with Pottery

Other than just being famous for the scene in the movie Ghost, pottery is a wonderful craft that can be incredibly relaxing and creative.
It is not easy to get started with pottery at home without some basic knowledge and tools, so you might want to begin with a short course in pottery at a local center.

But once you get started, here are some tips for you:

    1. Low-fire clays are good for bright colors and detailed patterns. But they need a good glaze to help seal them against water damage.
    2. High-fire clays are much more waterproof, just not as good with bright colors.
    3. Pottery by hand this is the simplest method when you do not have a potters wheel and are keeping your projects small. You take a small amount of clay and work it with your hand. Once you have shaped it, you can use a damp sponge to smooth the surfaces.
    4. A potters wheel is not something most people have at home but if you do get access to one, it is great for round, symmetrical objects. If you use a potters wheel you will need a kiln at the end for finishing.
    5. Once you have put your pottery in the kiln (get advice about how many hours your particular piece needs), you can now paint and glaze your piece.
Pottery is a complicated art form that has many stages but it is really worth it when you get to produce a piece that you have made yourself from start to finish.

    Good Luck

Sideburn trimmer does not cut anymore but still makes noise. trimmer blade does not move.

It is pretty common for the trimmer to get jammed up with hair particles and skin oils which can prevent the blade from moving.

Try running the blades of the trimmer in a shallow dish of rubbing alcohol. Then clean the blades vigorously with an old toothbrush or similar. If the blades still does not move try using the tip of a small flat screwdriver or similar object to push and advance the moveable blade. Repeat running in alcohol and brush clean

If this doesnt work, you will probably need a new trimmer

No power

Something probably jammed the disposer and tripped the overload. Look on the bottom of the disposer for a red reset button and push it in. Try to run the disposer. If it trips again, there is probably something jamming it.
Make sure the switch is OFF, then try to find the allen wrench that came with the unit and insert it in the hex hole in the bottom center of the disposer and turn it back and forth until it breaks free what ever was jamming it.
If you can't find the allen wrench that came with the unit, if I remember correctly, it's a 1/4" allen wrench, available at most any place that sells tools.
If you still have no power, go the your main circuit breaker panel and look for a breaker that has tripped. Turn it OFF then back ON.

It's possible the switch is bad but not likely. It's possible the motor is bad, but again, not as likely as just being jammed or just needs reset.

Garbage disposal's motor sounds jammed

To un jam your disposal you need the wrench that comes with it. It is a six sided piece of metal about 8" long with a bend on each end.
With the power off you stick either end of the wrench into the center of the disposal and engage the disposer. Turning back and forth till you free up the disposal.
Once you have the disposal free you can then turn on the power and it should work for you.

Printer problem

even a very small piece of paper (A small piece torn off a jammed sheet) can cause the sensor arm to stick in place giving a false paper jam. Double check the entire paper path (what is visible) using a flashlight.
Also, check for broken "flag" sensors. Basically a flag sensor is a small piece of plastic that is pushed out of the way when the paper is traveling through the unit. If one of these flags is broken it may display a paper jam error as well (The flag after paper travels through will drop back into the paper path.) If this is broken it will not trigger the sensor and thus the error condition exists..
Most likely you have a small piece of paper stuck inside the paper path somewhere.
Do not, I repeat do not use any sharp or pointed metal objects to remove any small paper from within the fuser unit, the fuser covers are very delicate and such poking and prodding will likely damage the fuser covers, causing bad print quality or drastically decrease the fuser life (a small tear will quickly render the fuser useless).
Hope this helps!

Humms but blades don't move. the blades move freely. the reset button did not fix it. thank you.

Try placing the allen wrench into the socket on the underside of the disposer and working it back and forth, then trying it electrically. The blades can appear to be free, even with a jam. The moving of the inner workings with the allen wrench should free it all up. Flush the disposer with a potful of ice and water when it turns freely.
Best regards, --W/D--

BADGER GARBAGE DISPOSAL just humms. does not work.

It sounds like the disposer has something jamming it. Try using the breaker wrench supplied with the disposer (or a suitable-size hex wrench) fitted into the socket on the bottom. Rock the wrench back and forth to see if you can loosen the jam. Another trick is to use a wooden rod (end of a broom handle, for example) to push on the blade to try dislodging the jam. Look inside with a flashlight to see if there is something that is easily missed. (I have found drink can tabs, coins and a shelf clip that way.)

It's also possible the motor starting capacitor inside the disposer or the motor itself is bad, in which case you would probably spend less on a new disposer than on repairing this one. But a jam is more likely.

Jammed paper -

try useing a can of air. lift te cover and blow it with the air. Then there is two fork prong in the upper cover, Its off white/clear. Hold that in and turn off then back on the machine. This will cause the printer head to move into visable range. Use the can of air and blow in the area the print head hides in. This should get it unless its glued in place by the ink. Try also blowing uder the head as it moves by.

Hi Scott, My experience is if there was a jam and it still says it's jammed after clearing the paper you missed some. Even if the sheet that caused the last jam didn't tear it may have moved a torn piece of paper that was in there from before. Check again, really well for small pieces of paper stuck somewhere. Hope that helps. If not let me know and I'll see what else we can do. El Duderino
